Big enough to breed this coming season?

I have several girls that we are hoping will be ready for the '09-'10 breeding season. It will be our first breeding season!

I'm just curious how big, on average, should a female be by now to be big enough to start breeding when the season starts?

Not sure about what size they should be now ,but as a rule of thumb the female should be at least 3 winters old and 1500g but there are exceptions to the rule I'm sure

Yeah, I know the 1500 rule. I just figured if some of them aren't going to be big enough, I'd rather be disappointed now rather than later.

I know it is variable and I know even if they are big enough to breed, that doesn't guarantee eggs or hatchlings. I was just hoping for a rough idea.

1500grams or 3 years of age i believe. I've heard stories of people breeding females that are only 600-800 grams, but are the right age, and getting 3-5 good eggs. I mean its all about maturity and just cause its fat enough doesnt mean that its body is mature enough.

They should roughly be 800-1000. grams now if you want to plug them into your breeding plans for next season. Age is very important in breeding for females. Males Eh, Not so much.

I would say 1000 grams would be a great point, if not larger, but if they are less than that, just make sure to pay attention to the smaller ones a little more to boost them up! Good luck, my friend!!

I think he meant that's what they should weight NOW in order to be at breeding weight next season

Re: Big enough to breed this coming season?

correct me if im wrong but the way I read it was Kenchap meant thats the minimum weight a female should be at right now if you plan on trying to breed her next season.

but.. i could be wrong? lol

Re: Big enough to breed this coming season?

Heres the thing I have a bred a female this year that is 2 years old but 2500 grams she laid 7 eggs for me. Then I have a female pastel thats the same age and around 2100 grams and she has done anything so far.. It all depends on the animal.
