My new bp's fecal matter...graphic picture inside

So yeah...I don't think this is so good. I bought him from Outback 2 weekends ago at a reptile expo and he has not eaten since. I've offered f/t mice and live mice. I'll be picking up some rats soon to test the waters with them. But ya getting back on topic. This guy defecated two times within the past week and both times it was all liquidy. I've never seen that with any of my bp's i own. They told me that he hasn't eaten for a while, but I was wondering if he could be sick becuase of how runny this stuff is. IT was mainly all clearish liquid the first time but I didnt get a pic of it that time. The smell is horrid. Is my snake okay?

I would take a sample of that (Turn a ziplock baggie inside out and grab as much as you can, flip and seal, or use a syringe to suck it up) and take it to a vet. They can do some tests for you. Put it in the fridge (I know, gross) if you can't get there today.
Since it's new, not eating and has done this 2 times I would definately get it in.
Good luck and keep us posted!!

Yea that's never a good sign..Most likely internal parasites. Not eating is a sure fire sign something is up..Take your snake to a Reptile vet and have them do a "Fecal smear and float" you'll probably be on some oral meds for a while most vets will give the meds to the snake for you.

It may be a bacterial disease. Look up: enteritis and gastroenteritis These diseases cause snakes to pass undigested or partially digested food items(gooey - stinky stools). Jason Bowden

My mom made me clean it up becuase it smelt so bad. So do I have to wait until it defecates again or can I take him to the vet and see what's up without the fecal matter?

I've heard that if they poop runny they might have internal parasites or tapeworms...either ways try to take this pic to your vet and he can tell what is going on...theres no need to bring the poop to him...

    Hi,

The vet might be able to get a sample to test from the snake - I can't for the life of me remember what it is called though.

But he really needs either the snake or a sample - a picture can only tell him so much really.

Although a good reptile vet would likely be able to make a good guess from the picture, an actual sample would be MUCH better. For example, the vet might conclude internal parasites from the picture, but the actual sample would likely tell the vet exactly what type of parasite. They can look at the sample under the microscope and run other tests on it. No way you can do that with a picture.

I once heard a vet say he can tell more about the health of an animal from a sample of its poo than from seeing the animal itself. This is an obvious exaggeration, if for no other reason that they can often get a sample from the animal while it is in their office, but it does go to show that a LOT can be learned from poo.

To the OP: I would call your vet, and hopefully they will be able to look at the picture via email, and from there tell you if it is best to bring in the snake, wait for it to deliver another sample of poo, or what. Good luck!
    Casey
