this is why you MUST QT!!
i was holding my blood python a 2 days ago and found a mite. i searched her tub and found them in the water bowl and on her. i soaked her and the male that is in the tub next to her and used PAM. the tubs look clean right now but im still going to treat the tubs again in a month or so and everyone in the house is going to get treated just to be on the safe side.
i got the pair from a good friend and his husbandy is great. he has been battling them from some time now but has been mite free for a long time. however, our club participates in what is known as friday fest. there are live bands and vendors and our club sets up a display with animals to educate the public about reptiles. they may have come from there
without furter a due....this is what a snake mite looks like close up. the pictures were taken using a dissecting scope with a camera attachment. the mites are in bad shape (i can tell because i look at things like this all day long) from the preservation methods. believe it or not, mites are delicate and special procedures have to be done to preserve them. i used water on day one and ETOH on day two so they are showing signs of dehydration and some fungus is starting to show up. we also didn't have a light tent or any good light sources for the pictures.

Ew. Good lesson on the QT though. It's better to see it first hand, that things can happen, rather than just telling people over and over, "you have to quarantine."

Now that is neat. Gross, but one of the coolest things I've ever seen. They sort of remind me of ticks.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Re: this is why you MUST QT!!
all the ones i have found have been brown. it should be noted that there are 250 different speices of snakes mites so color may vary.
all the pics i have seen of them have been black though. and i have never seen one with a marking on its back like that.
