I doubt any breeder is going to feed a ball python outside of its enclosure. That would be really time consuming to feed that many snakes...

I feed in the tubs, and for the most part I think majority of breeders feed in the tub. It's easy and mess free. I don't have a problem with them being nippy, they know the difference between my hand and food.

Re: Do you feed your snakes in there tubs/cages?

If you're worried about cage aggression, think about this: Most people with giant snakes feed in the cage for safety reasons. If feeding in a cage caused cage aggression and feeding out of the cage diminished cage aggression in snakes, I bet that most people would feed giants out of the cage. From the little I have worked with them, both for your own safety and that of the animal, you only feed giants in the cage. I gotta figure that is a pretty decent reason to say that it is perfectly fine to feed smaller snakes in the cage as well, even where safety for the human really isn't an issue

I've never met a snake with cage aggression due to being fed in it's housing the way that it can happen with certain other animals.

Many snakes get tuned into when to expect feeding time, and as such even if they are fed in the cage will often be unlikely to think you are food unless you smell like rodent putting warm dangling fingers in a cage on feeding day.

I also don't like handling snakes with a full belly for their sake, so if I can avoid picking them up at all right after a feeding I will. This is the main reason I feed in the cage.

Re: Do you feed your snakes in there tubs/cages?

for me it depends on the snake. some i feed in the tubs, some i don't. i don't feed my kings in their tubs because i don't want them to ingest the aspen and one of the kings is picky about his f/t and has to be placed in a small container with the food for a while before he eats it. i feed my bloods in a seperate container as well for the same reason.

the rest get fed in their tubs. i put down paper towels for the ball pythons and the chondro eats from her perch so no problems there. the carpets are on paper towels.

i thaw in water so the rats tend to pick up substrate when they are on it.

I have never understood the concept of feeding outside of their enclosures. It seems to me that it would only stress them out, and would increase the chance of the owner getting bit.

Re: Do you feed your snakes in there tubs/cages?

Screw being bit. My biggest worry is a regurgitation. My brother's sister bought two new boas and she was feeding them on Easter in the bathtub. I was the only one willing to grab the female, and it was heartbreaking to me because I had to keep jostling her when I moved her from bathtub to bedroom.

I don't feed outside of their tubs. They either eat or they don't when they want. I leave it to them.

phew this is a worn out subject, who cares how everyone else does it!!! If it works for you, then do it, but I know it deffinately has NO benefit at all to the snakes temperment and could stress the snake out into not eating.

I feel that feeding outside the enclosure causes unnecessary stress for the snake.

Re: Do you feed your snakes in there tubs/cages?

I've always fed my snakes inside their tubs. I don't see any possible benefits from feeding them in a separate enclosure, but I can see problems with taking a hungry snake out of its tub, putting it in a feeding tub and feeding it, then picking up a snake that just ate 10%-20% of it's body weight and moving it back into its tub. It may work for some people, but it is unnecessary and wastes time at the very least.
