    Take 2...DUW

I got a pic message from Ashtin yesterday while I was at work and while she was at work at Emerald Bay...it was a baby savy. I already had a feeling she wanted it since she has been wanting a savy for awhile because of Abraxas dying. Well I had to go pick up Cortana because she took her with her to make sure she was a she. Well when I got there the first thing she did was drag me over to the baby and pull it out. Little did she know I was already going to tell her to get it. So I told her it was ok and of course her face lit up like Christmas morning. lol. She got the tank and stuff and brought him home last night. So within the past 2 days we have gained 2 more pets. lol. Its name is Lohe, Norwegian for dragon.

Before I get to the pics I have a few questions...How often should we try to hold him to get him a little more friendly. He doesn't bite at us but he does hiss until he is actually held then he just chills in your hand and will open his mouth every once in awhile. How often should we feed him or should we just throw some crickets in there so he can eat them when he pleases? Should we try offering him a pinky every once in awhile? I know to keep insects as his staple diet and to feed mice and rats every once in awhile.

    And here are the pics

Cute really nice coloring. She's quit a bit darker then mine and his siblings although I haven't seen many to begin with as they are not that common in my area's shops.Mine's a bit smaller I wonder if they change colors as they grow so he'll darken up a bit?? I have been told that a mainly insect diet and pinkies, chopped up adult mice( for the calcuim) uncooked ground turkey, cooked ground turkey at first. I'm also going to be tring the sav meatloaf on rotation. I look at mine though the tank a few times a day and just pet him once or twice and hold him in the tank once for as long as he's willing so no closed hands yet. Mine has been really shy though so I need to befriend him first then I'll take his out of his tank.
    Too many pets to list!

Once I pick him up he just kinda sits in my hand like he couldn't really care less. I have to make the substrate mixture tonight or I may go ahead and get it now...sounds like a good idea to me.

Nice savannah but you need to fix a few things or in time you will have a savannah that will slowly die.

First take all that stuff out of the cage and put a good 6-12 inches of dirt, make a solid top to replace the screen one so the cage will be able to keep the humidity and heat in. Buy a temp gun and get its basking spot to 130F + as its import for them to properly digest there food.
You should be feeding him every day to every other day depending on whether or not hes hungry and try to feed small meals not large ones. Then as he gets bigger (3ft) you will only need to feed him 2-3 times a week as they are not in their growth phrase.
You can feed him pinkies or even try baby quails if he can eat one yet. If you want to keep insects in his diet in the future i would suggest you look into lobster, dubia or Madagascar roaches
The roaches can be kept in a large been with temps ranging from 80-95F, the warmer it is the quicker they breed and there a good supply for food. You just got to let them sit for a good month before start feeding them off and you wouldn't have to buy insects anymore as well.
heres some Madagascar hissers they get around 4 inches full grown, my supply is low as i had to start feeding them off almost right away as i ran out of food and all my rodents and birds weren't coming for another week.

Thanks for the feeding info, I already knew about all the rest. I was at home depot getting the mixture for the substrate, I use 50%topsoil, 25% cypress mulch, and 25% play sand. It worked in the past and it will work again. And because of using this the humidity will stay where it needs to for awhile without needing a top because of the time it takes for it to dry out. I have a temp gun already, this is the thread about our late savvy.
