What is happening on April 23?

What exactly is happening on April 23rd? I believe I've seen phrases like "it will be in front of the subcommittee" or something, but I don't know what that means. Will the subcommittee be voting on it on that date? And if it passes that vote, it goes on to the full house, but if it does not pass, it is dead?

Please provide more info for those of us that don't know as much as we perhaps should about how our government works!

Re: What is happening on April 23?

For a bill to become law it has to make it through both houses and then be signed by the president(or sit on his desk for 10 days and automatically become law unless congress adjourns before the 10 days is up).

What would have to happen is the sub-committe on this bill votes on the 23rd. God forbid it passes it would go on to a full house vote. If it passed there too THEN it goes to the Senate where it would have to pass again. Once this happens it goes to Obama's desk where he WILL sign it into law since both houses are democratic majorities. This is why having both houses and the president all from one party is so scary. At least with Clinton and some of Bush's presidency there was a different party in power in the legislature.

Sadly, the Democrats can win in a straight party vote and like I said, the sub-committee members who are for this are democrats and they'll get the support from most of the party. The good news is that not everyone votes party lines and money talks. Killing a 3 billion/year business is not something that will be taken lightly be everyone. At least I hope not.

Thanks. So there will be a vote in the subcommittee on April 23rd? I wasn't sure if that might be the date when they begin discussing it, or what.
