Rat related question
ok i been breedign rats for snake food and I gotten way ahead of myself, more rats than snakes large enough to eat them. I too ka bunch of the rats to the petstore and was more less told he take what every I can give him. but I need an ideal as to what would be a good asking price for them. I took a bunch of rat pups ( about the size of a almost adult mouse) and a pair of breeder size rats. I have more that can go with in the next 3 weeks so I was wonder what a fair price to charge him. He interested in me possible supplying rats on a regular base for him since i am local and all.
I want to build enough store credit to get either a green tree boa or possible a ablino bp though him.. for myself later on . I am not sure yet. I also hope that in supplying hime with live rats I can use a bunch of my frozen ones up. I also stil lhave my asf colonies going too so I should be in good shape.

Re: Rat related question
The few times I sold off my surplus to pet stores I did not find that I made much. I think I got 50 cents a pinkie and at most 1.50 per rat depending on the size.
But over time that will build up to a nice little credit.
What I would do is ask around to a few stores, just phone them (don't tell them it is a covert operation) and ask what they are buying rats for. That will give you the market price and just charge him that much.

Re: Rat related question
you could also find another breeder who is local
If i ever get surplus of my rats and decide/find someone to buy them i will just sell them at the price i would get them for
pinky .50
fuzzy.75
hopper 1.00
weaner 1.50
small 2.00
medium 2.50
large 3.75 (i would go to 3.50)
jumbo 4.00
prices around where you live will probably be different, these are just in my area

Re: Rat related question
Have you socialized these rats at all? They make excellent pets and you may be able to sell a few that way; just be honest with any potential buyers that these were bred as feeders and you don't have any long term knowledge of what health conditions may arise.

Re: Rat related question
I know you want to get credit at you lps... if you go that route I'd say, "whatever they're willing to pay!" in my experience they often set their own price.
But for me:
When I have extras I freeze them and sell in bulk on my local craigslist. I don't make much per rat, but I make enough to cover the cost of food and bedding for my rats and mice (I sell them too.) and coming out even makes me happy. It's like feeding all of my snakes for free!
I usually charge about 1.50 a small rat, and 1 dollar for an adult mouse, depending on how many I'm selling at once, I like to make my price a round number since I deal in cash so if I've got 34mice frozen I'll sell for $30 or less if my freezer is getting full.
Plus, there's no hassle of keeping them alive and fed. When they're weaned I freeze off the excess. My customers also come to me so I don't have to deal with transporting rats to stores or whatnot.

My house? ... 13 snakes, 3 geckos, a tarantula, a boyfriend, a roommate (yes the roommate and boyfriend make the "animals" list), 3 cats, a roach colony and don't ask me to count the rodents.

Re: Rat related question
I get about half the retail price or equal amount to retail in trade. Some times I need mice and will trade in a few large rats. Teh pet store owner can't keep rats in stock, so he loves it when I stop by...
I have a new mom that has chewed through 2 tubs and jumped out of a 55gallon fish aquraium 2 twice. She is going to the pet store as soon as she weans the last few. She is a real pretty sable berkshire and there is a champagne female berkshire in the litter that will take her place...
