Red Blood head color
Ok, I have a pair of reds that are breeding. When they are separate, their heads are a light grey color. When they are locked, their heads turn to a dark grey and almost black. Has anyone noticed this before? I thought I was crazy the first time it happened.

Here's the male while he's locked up. You can notice how dark his head has become.

I thought bloods were notorious for changing head colors throughout the day. And I can sure see why breeding might also cause a color change.

Our blacks go through some stunning head color changes. It seems when the black head girl is by herself, she will chrome it out to a very silver color, and when disturbed, will start going back to a black color.

Re: Red Blood head color
i use to have some bloods, and i never ever saw them have anything but charcoal heads.
Then once i started to breed them, their heads would turn silver. pretty wild. although i would not put my left nut on the chopping block to say, it was def. because of breeding...bloods do change their heads quite a bit. The dark blacks as well.
Some people say its mood changes, temp changes, or just random...who knows.
I do not recall seeing borneos or yellow headed blacks change head colors, but i am just one fish in the sea that has kept these fine animals.

Re: Red Blood head color
With our yellow headed black, it is quite a subtle color difference, since her head is so light anyways. On our chrome headed black, his head can get a nice tan brown, but when he chromes, it turns into a very pale cream color.
Quite amazing to see, as the color change goes a little bit down their neck as well.

Re: Red Blood head color
I have a red male who does the same thing, except it happens all the time. I can't really put a finger on what makes him do it. He's been breeding the last few months, although his head stayed black pretty much the whole time.

Re: Red Blood head color
I wonder if there is any correlation with head color and the mood that particular animal is in at the time. I do know that I nearly got my head taken off by my big borneo during feeding time last sunday. Her cage is at eye level and she struck through the rat and went for my face. I swear I could smell her breath. Her head color has remained the same so far.
