A new issue thanks in advance.
Well we figured we were good but..
all was good, our lil bud snickers had feeding down and he/she had a great shed I was happy... then the past two days he/she was in the water bowl off and on. I got thinking (past bp.net reading) this may not be ok.
Took snickers out of the water and REALLY looked his/her scales over and
found 2 tiny black dots. i'm sure mites. killed 'em
removed 2 from snickers scales sanitized the enclosure - removed everything and replaced aspen and sanitized hides/water dish kept everything out but plastic hides and water dish, fresh bedding and probes.
Do i now do a mite treatment - PAM?
I know I do but thanks for the procedure in advance.
I'm feeding live mice in a tub does the treatment help with new food?
Thanks AGAIN!

Re: A new issue thanks in advance.
I'd wait to see if there were any more mites (big chance).
If so, take everything out, clean it, then PAM the feces out of it, put substrate back in, and PAM that too...

What I would do immediately, just because hommie don't play with mites!
Clean out the WHOLE cage. If you are using natural hides, bake them in the oven to kill the mites, 175*F (I think) for one hour, replace substrate with paper towels, replace everything in the cage and PAM it. Be sure you read the directions fully before using PAM or any other chemicals with your snakes.
Some one else with more knowledge then I have can tell you how to treat your snake its self. I rely on the PAM, it works for millions of people....
I use plastic hides from reptilebasics.com and plastic bowls so I can wash them in hot soapy water and not worry about the mites hiding from me.
Hope this helps. Mites are not the end of the world, don't stress but don't play around.

Re: A new issue thanks in advance.
Thanks again
I did clean it out and boil the plastic and put in new bedding - I'll have to treat everything
and change again after the pam gets here - these mite come from the food right? or have they been
here the whole time I killed 2 black dots like tiny small fleas - my guess they were adult mites
are they a constant battle? Do they come in on food. OH MY GOD! ARE THEY CR-- LICE ! j/k

Re: A new issue thanks in advance.
Did you get this snake from a pet store by chance?
Don't panic, they are nasty but you can deal with this. Here's a couple of links to help you understand....
Know your enemy!
http://www.vpi.com/publications/the_...of_snake_mites
Where to buy Provent-A-Mite (follow directions on the can EXACTLY, it does NOT go directly on the snake)
http://www.pro-products.com/miteandtemp.html
Snake mites have a 30 day life cycle. If you don't deal with them they will be back.

Again - Thanks to everyone! we PAMed the works - no sign of the little buggers.
And Snickers is still eating. whew! everything seems ok he/she is out of the water dish.
Only thing I've noticed is more activity in the daylight? I figure it must be the cleanin/treatment. adjusting maybe? Anyway Frankykeno yes snickers is a pet store purchase and AGAIN they were TOTALLY useless unlike the members of this board thanks again! Also the fella at pro-products was fun to talk to.

I'm glad you got'er'dun!
I just bought some nix to try that out as I've heard lots of good stuff about that treatment. How did you find PAM? was it harsh like I've heard?

Isnt NIX a lice treatment?
Also to answer some questions; Mites are a reptile pest it is unlikely that it came on your feeders. Yes mites are just like lice but just for reptiles. I would use paper towels for the substrate DO NOT USE ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN NOT CHANGE EASY AND THEY CAN HIDE IN!
Hope this helps some, if you have any questions ask on the forums in a matter of minutes normally you get answers.
