    can bp's be over handled

my BP is very cool about handling it seems. she likes 2 wrap round my hand and find a position and not move for long periods of time. i really enjoy holding her and find myself holding her alot. is there any way a bp can be overhandled? does alot of handling cause harm at all?

I would limit it to 30 mins a day, max.

Re: can bp's be over handled

I don't want to get anyone upset but i handle my BP at least everyday. During the summer time i take her to my friends houses and she just hangs out around my neck for hours. She still eats fine and is acting otherwise normal activity.

Unless there is signs that your snake is stressed then im sure handling her will not hurt her in anyway.

Just my 2 cents. I love my snake and handle her at all times unless she is eating in which i dont' touch her at all for 2 days.

Some snakes handle handling really well others not so much. I got one that as soon as I open the tub she hauls hinney to the back...

Handling them can cause them to go off feed or be nippy.

Just handle less then 30 minutes a day until you really know your snake and can recognize the stress signs.

Re: can bp's be over handled

    I Second Hoax...............

Your BP will let you know whats up.......each snake will have limits.....overall tolerance to handling....etc etc....your snake will give you feedback thru your hands, by it's movement, feeding performance etc....know your snake and you will know its day to day...week to week limits. There needs to be a time awareness though no matter how good they do for the simple fact of temperature control. If you are handling for 2 hours outside their tub in a 70 degree room this could be going against their thermoregulating desire or needs.

I still have 1 out of 10 that just as soon bite my hand to shooooo me away each time I go to clean, spotcheck, feed, handle or what have you.
From the beginning she would strike 5-8 times each time I would move my hand into the tub to clean, handle or what have you. She gets 5-10 minutes everyday and she is just getting to where she will relax in my hand and move around. But she still will try to keep me from getting her out of the tub each time. She still feeds like a champ and this is why I am religous about continuing to handle each day except for post feed. She is slowly but surely changing but she is much like my wife. It has taken her 8 years to be trained to do all the work in the house lawl jk....

It is not a great idea to have snakes out in public especially unannounced. It may attract attention but sometimes you can attract bad attention. Some people like snakes while alot don't. It only takes one that doesn't to start some type of ban or negative affect.

In the late 1980's in NYC I would see a few people carry their 6-8 boas and burms to parks and public events. I never took mine out to be publicly displayed. As every year pasted more and more people brought their reptiles out because they saw the attention they got. Some people scared others with their snakes intentionally. In 2005 boas and pythons (burmese, boa constictors, ... the bigger snakes) became banned. I wonder who could have sparked that fire. My first and favorite Reptile Store shut down after decades of being in business because of this.

You don't want people knocking on your door when their toy dog is missing and your boa is nowhere to be found...

Even though your intentions are probably innocent. Be more responsible with your PD of your snake.
