    Odor control

Hi all I have been trying to search through all the past posting for this but haven't come up with a lot so I thought I'd post and ask.

I hope you guys are not getting to tired of me yet cause I will probably have tons more questions once I actually get my rats!

Anyway I am just wondering if you guys keep air cleaners in your rat rooms.

Whats the best ways you guys have found to help keep the odors at bay.

I just found this little air cleaner thats made for pet odors . I actually saw it at petsmart when I bought my cats a fountain waterer.

Heres a link to it to get your opinions

Anyway I am just trying to get a jump on this issue too.

I really and truly appreciate all the help and wondering info you all have been giving me . Its all been very helpful.
Thank you all sooooo very much.

airwick air fresheners like the ones that go off every half our seem to work well. I also use pelleted horse bedding for my rodent bins.

The best odor control for me is to open a window, you can do other things but fresh air makes to room completely odor free.

Come here little guy. You're awfully cute and fluffy but unfortunately for you, you're made of meat

    Re: Odor control

I believe Bruce (the Mod) posted something about a Febreeze plugin that he's tried and is very impressed with. It cleans the air but doesn't leave behind some gawd awful flower-over-rat-poop scent behind. I think that combined with a room with good ventilation and the ability to open a window plus a good cleaning routine works just fine. I know in my home I have well over 100 or so rats at any given time, yet my worst struggle is with cat litter boxes for our two darned cats.

Its similar to this. Carbon or charcoal filter that traps odor instead of just masking it with other scents.

Alternatively you can just leave a tray of activated charoal(which you can find in the aquarium section of any chain pet store) out in the room and it'll do the job as well. It has a ton of surface area and just traps odor particles on the surface. When it starts to get a little smelly again just dump and refill the tray.

    Re: Odor control

The Febreeze air filter didnt make a dent in our rat room over the winter (wanted to keep the exhaust fan window closed).

For me, its an exhaust fan on high, pelleted bedding like Equine Fresh (not all pellets are created equal, some get really stinky) and sometimes using one of those automated scent sprays.

It really isn't bad, I find the nursing females that have aspen stink it up the most. Pellets really work well for odor rather than shavings.

x2...minus the exhaust fan, but only because we really just don't have any way to do it...if we could, we would. When it was still warm, we would leave the balcony door open and that completely eliminated any smell. Sometimes we put the rats outside for the day. The best spray/auto smelly treatment we have found is the plug in scented oil fans. They don't overpower the room, they take the edge off the stench, and they are cheaper to use than many of the other alternatives. Pelleted bedding, particularly equine fresh, helped a lot also, but creates more dust.
