Drummers!?

Hey all,

Just wondering if there are any drummers in the community... As well as having the "Ball Python Fever", I have also been bitten by the "I love Drumming" bug... I'm a total noob beginner but I'm still loving it!

For any other drummers in here:

Im already on expert.... uhh... do not have much of a selection, my guitar hero doesn't let me download songs as of right now because of a problem im having.

My son is a drummer. He has a full set of Pearl's that he built up over the years. He is an old dude, 34 years old. He started taking drum lessons as a young kid from a semi famous local drummer Ray Parker who was found murdered in his home a couple of years ago. My son plays in a hard rock band called South Bound Mary in local bars. All the band members have regular jobs and they try to play in the area once every two weeks. We went to see him play last weekend at what used to be Jamie's Lounge, a bar that was owned by another semi famous local guy named Jamie Coe who had a band called Jamie and the Gigalo's that used to play on American Bandstand and tour with Bobby Darin and Del Shannon in the olden times.That bar was just renamed Rock Stars 3 weeks ago because Jamie died and new owners took over.

Been playing for 27 years. Have a 12 piece set of Ludwigs. Played professionally for a beach band named Atlantic Spotlight for 5 years traveling up and down the east coast. Hung it up for a while then got a chance about a year ago to play with Blackwater Ryhthm and Blues Band. Had to stop 5 months ago when I severely damaged my hand in an auto accident. I am getting the hand amputated Feb 26 and I will be getting a prosthetic. I plan on learning to use the new hand good enough to play the drums again and be the first one armed ball python breeder!

Oh Wow! I love guys with a super positive attitude! It is.... Inspiring! Isn't it Def Lepard that has a single arm drummer as well? I'm not sure, but I think he played without prosthetics and play a lot of double-base.

My son, a self-proclaimed ball python expert, age 5, has been taking drum lessons for a year now. He has a practice pad, a snare, and bells (looks like a xylophone but they call it bells for some reason). He plays whatever is the assignment for that week. The teacher is awesome! He was the only one that was willing to take in a persistent, rumbunctious 4-yr-old.

I tried the playing with one arm deal, my problem is I am right handed and my right hand is the injured one. I was trying one handed with my nondominate hand. Makes it a little tougher. If I still had my dominate hand I could still play pretty good.

The operation is tomorrow isn't it, Frank? We're going on a prayer and fasting for you. And it should still be possible to get good with the non-dominate hand with lots of practice, yes? If you can give us an update on the results of the operation, or have somebody post something here, that would be really cool. But, don't worry about it. Just get better soon!

Thanks, you don't know how much that means. This community is great. Yes, I am going in the morning, nerves getting very shakey as reality sets in.

Been playing for about 5 years.
I play several different sets. At home I have Yamaha DT Xplorer electronic kit. No ideal sound and feel wise, but great for practice, and cheap. All things considered, they're pretty good. The accoustic set I play is an old Premier kit.
The ones I play most often are Roland TD12 electronics- they feel almost like real drums, and sound great through a mix. I play on the worship band at church with those drums.
My favourite type of music by far to play is funk. For a drummer, there's nothing more fun than getting locked into a groove with a good bass play on a good funk rythym.
Fun stuff? Jam as much as you can. Play with as many differnt people as you can. When you play with different people- particularly rythym guitar and bass players, you learn to adapt. If you always play with the same people, you'll settle into your rut and play the same way all the time. Remember- a drummer's best friend is a good bass player. if you find a good bass player to jam with, it will free you up so much, and you'll be able to do stuff you never knew you had in you.
Another good tip for a beginner- set your car on cruise and drum away with your hands and feet. The more you get beats in your head, the easier it is to let them flow out of you.
And pay attention to what you're listening to- listen to different drummers styles. For example- put in a Dave Matthews Band cd and then focus on Carter Beauford's drumming- it's phenomenal. Sometimes you can listen to a band for the whole, sometimes you listen for the drums, or bass, or whatever.
