Just how blue do they get in shed?
Nearly had a heartattack. I went to feed my hondo and when I went back about 30 minutes later, he hadn't eaten. Totally out of character for this eating machine. I lifted his hide and he's gray blue. I thought he was dead, so gently prodded him just enough to get him to move. I covered him back up, took out the food (f/t) and came here. Is this normal? Do they really get that gray/blue? Nothing has changed, he was out roaming Thursday night. Do I need to mist the cage?

Re: Just how blue do they get in shed?
They get blue like the sky on a cold cloudless day in April.
And they get grey like a wet sidewalk.
As long as the water bowl is big enough to soak in you're probably ok. Misting is ok but don't leave the bedding wet.
Pictures always help.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

I'll go take one then, didn't want to upset him. The caresheet/sticky says he doesn't need a bowl big enough to soak in, but I'll put one in there for now. brb with pics and btw, your description eases my mind so much.

okay, after your reassurance and some better light, I feel much better. He's not as ashen as he first appeared. So this is shed? His eyes are opaque, but not really blue.
Now, I think another beer might just help the nerves a bit.

The look changes from day to day as the process of building up subcutaneous oils continues, eventually leading to totally clear but dirty looking skin and eyes which is then followed by shedding.
You're all good from what I can see.
I always keep a bowl big enough for soaking in with my colubrids.
