Question for you breeders out there?
Does any body keep their collection in there basement? And have you been able to breed them while keeping them in the basement?
I live in New York where it's gets pretty cold outside and my basement is alot cooler than the rest of the house.
I've been pairing my snakes all of winter and only seen one lock. Back in November and nothing since. She almost doesn't even pay him any attention(besides he's in her space).
Do you guys think the overall temp in the basement has had played a factor?
Overall temp in the basement is high 60's maybe low 70's.
What would you guys suggest doing?
Thanks for the HELP........

Re: Question for you breeders out there?
Mine are in my basement however I keep my basement heated at 78-80 year round (during the summer I don't have to do anything, during the winter I have oil filled heaters running)

Lots of folks maintain their collections in a basement. Wish I had one. Also, oil filled heaters are the bomb! Great heat output for the juice consumed.

Re: Question for you breeders out there?
Currently we keep ours in the basement, but due to the size of the room being much larger than what we need we are planning to move them up into the spare bedroom. Then the room in the basement they were in will get refinished in more of my wifes taste than the current panelling has and made into a combo entertaining room and guest bedroom with its own bath until our collection out grows the spare bedroom. At which time we will swap things back around. Granted the outgrowing of the spare bedroom may happen sooner than later considering we are getting into blood pythons which take up a little more room.
As far as breeding goes we have one pairing that just isn't going to go this year, one pairing that we have only seen a lock or two out of, and 3 pairings with tons of locks. Our hopes are for 3 viable clutches this year in the end. More would be better, but...

Re: Question for you breeders out there?
I have mine in the basement. It was just a bit too cool down there, so I got an oscillating heater with a thermostat to help boost the temps in the winter. This is my first season breeding, but they're all doing just fine so far.

I'm in Canada and my snakes are in the basement. I can have the temps between 60-86F.
Right now the temp is 84F.

Re: Question for you breeders out there?
I'm in Eastern Ontario (only 1 hour and 15 minutes from upper New York) and my BPs have just started breeding a couple of weeks ago. Last year all of them were early and this year they're all later than usual. I'm in the basement as well and it gets cool. I use heat rope under the bins to heat the cages.
We did have allot more days of snow (precipitation) early in the season last year so that may have been a factor (barometric pressure changes).
Keep cooling at night and introducing the male(s). There are allot of tricks you can try but in the end if the male isn't ready to go he won't.
Are you seeing blood streaks on the bottom of the cage?

Re: Question for you breeders out there?
Thanks all for the advise. No I'm not seeing any blood. How much longer would you keep droping the temps at night? Mostly everything I've read said to rise the temps come the second week in February?
Thanks again for the help.
