    Re: 1st Project?

My first project was actually multiple projects. When I decided to start breeding ball pythons I made an initial purchase that included pastels, spiders, ghosts, yellow belly's and albinos.

I continue to recommend the same approach for people new to breeding; build the basics. Consider your budget and which morphs you like the most and start there. Pastels and spiders are a key ingredient to a lot of different projects so adding them into your collection is never a bad choice.

I absolutely think that ball pytons are a good project (from a business perspective). While the prices have taken a beating in recent years you can still make a business out of it or, at the very least, have a hobby that pays for itself.

    Re: 1st Project?

My first projects were a pastel and spider to normal females. I do not suggest going this route, because of all of the normals produced. I highly suggest breeding either morph to morph or morph to het; for example, a pastel to a spider or an albino to a het albino. You could also make it interesting and breed a simple recessive to a codom / het simple recessive; for example a pied to a pastel het pied. I do not suggest breeding simple recessive het to het, because the normal looking offspring are not guaranteed to be het. Rather, I suggest breeding a visual to a het. This way you have a better chance at producing more visuals, and all of the normal looking offspring are guaranteed to be hets.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: 1st Project?

    Thanks

I was thinking about getting a Bumblebee to begin with and breeding it with my Normal. and start a bigger project with the offspring i.e spiders/pastels/Bumblebees/Normals.
Though if i can afford it maybe another different morph.
I have about a year to wait though until my Normal girl is ready, though im gona purchase a male in the coming months... I'm going to start as a hooby methinks

    Re: 1st Project?

My first project was to produce a Bumblebee (This is the snake that got me into breeding in the first place)

So my first season I produced a bee but also some Black Pastels and Possible het pieds (I had 4 clutches)

What I would recommend is for you to work on something YOU really like, we all have our favorite, all you need to do is to find yours

    Re: 1st Project?

I'm probably in the minority in this, but I think an awesome project is to start with a single 100% het (pick any recessive trait you like) male, and some normal females. Breed father back to daughters. Finally produce visual morph years down the road. It will take a long time, but imagine how rewarding it will be when you accomplish your goal.

I do recommend you get a snake from a very reputable breeder for the founding male, cuz it would really suck to spend all that time and find out you don't even have the gene.

I also wouldn't recommend doing that project exclusively. Get some co-doms or something else going also so you are producing visual morphs, otherwise it could get really discouraging.

Most importantly, pick things that you like. Not just the morphs, but the individual snakes.

I haven't started my first project but I am well on my way! I plan on producing bumble bees. Next project after that is PASTEL AXANTHICS WOOO. 8D 8D
I probably won't be able to breed until winter 2010 but it is something to look forward too!

    Re: 1st Project?

My first clutch was a het pied to normal. I'd reccomend a first clutch that can produce a low quality morph, for the thrill of producing a morph, but without the large expense that goes with high end morphs.

    Re: 1st Project?

HMMM, some very good advice there and alot to think about

With respect to the quality of the Snake I'l be going to Crystal Palace Reptiles. I was in there recently and they had some stunning Morphs even a secret one (apparently lol), plus I spoke to one of the guys and they were really helpful with advice etc, they also stock NERD Morphs so jobs a good un

I'm going to wait a month or two and see what i can afford

Thanks for all the good advice
