Question How do you keep Veggies/Greens fresh?

Ok, this is for all you herbivorous lizard owners out there! How do you keep the veggies and greens fresh for long amounts of time??

I have, as some of you know, a young Blue tongue Skink that must be fed fresh veggies and greens every day. Since he's so small, he only eats a tiny portion - enough to cover the bottom of a jar lid - daily.

Greens do not sell in small quantities, and I hate wasting 60% of the head or bag, so how do you keep the greens from going bad?? I have a vacuum sealer, but it doesn't seem to work on leafy greens.

Any suggestions or tried and true methods out there??

I don't have lizards that eat greens, but my birds love them. When I get them home, I clean them well with cold water, then wrap in a cold damp paper towel and place into a big ziplock bag. That usually keeps them fresh for a couple weeks if I keep them rinsed and trimmed with a clean paper towel every so often.

I have found that "Green bags", I believe they have been advertised on TV as Debbie Meyer Green Bags. I found them at a local Christmas Tree SHoppe. once veggies are washed and dried they hold up three times longer than normal in these green bags. I'm not sure who else carries them though.

Re: How do you keep Veggies/Greens fresh?

I have a russian tortoise that eats fresh greens every day. I make a huge tuf full and frees them in ziplock bags.

I use a cheese grater to shred the butternut squash. And a big chopping knife for the greens.

The trick to freezing them is getting all the water off them after chopping up.
Use lots of paper towles and get them as dry as you can.
Then just stuff them in ziplock snack bags. The snack bags are half the size of a sandwich bag. The snack bags make it easier to scoop out the veggies.

I make about a 6 month supply and every morning i scoop out a golf ball size chunk and run warm water over it to thaw then drain and feed.
    Works out perfect.
