heating/lighting?...so confused!
Really confused about the heating and lighting setup that a ball python needs. I have a UTH but what temp should it be set at? Should I get a ceramic heater for the hot side too or does that make it too hot and dry? what wattage? I have heard that they dont need lighting but should I have it anyways, if so what kind/watt?
thanks!

Re: heating/lighting?...so confused!
I have a UTH and a T-Stat set at 78 with a humidifying set up so its about 50%. Bulbs take away humidity so I stay away from them, a good UTH and T-Stat and good bubbler is all you need.
If you came here to complain you have used up 98% of your time use the other 2% to find the door!

78 degrees is a quite a bit low for a BP.
Here's something that should help... BP Caresheet

Well thats your OP she is VET checked and healthy as a Horse eats regular and sheds all in one peice.
TEMPERATURE
~80F (ambient temps)
~90F (basking temps)
75 or below is unhealthy
She does not like 80 or higher I would know this because I have tinkered with the temps to find where "she" likes it. And what is 2 degrees from 80 anyway. See sig line.

Well, that's YOUR experience. So you have the one vet checked, feeding, sheding, and healthy as a horse BP who hangs out with the temp too low. Congrats. For the rest of the BP world, standard advice is standard for a reason.
Read your own sig line.

Keep in mind this is someone who is new to BP husbandry and probably is unsure on how to "read" their BP. In your original post you also did not mention whether you were referring to ambient temp, hot spot or cool side. Next time maybe if you clarified a bit more for someone new to the hobby it would help.

Re: heating/lighting?...so confused!
So you say all BP's are the same then? That they all like constant 80 amb temps and 90 bask temps. And again 2 degrees from 80 is too low! Sorry but 16 years of collecting and no premature deaths and zero illnesses tells me;
A) My methods seem to be working just fine.
B) You two have too much time on your hands to Internet-Argue.
C) The OP was asking a question/opinions and that was mine.
D) Sounds like someone has not done their homework.
E) Next time someone posts about their set-up and pet bear in mind they might just know a bit more what works best for their pet.

All lenastorms was saying is that your conditions might not be the best for most BPs. Since this person is obviously a newbie to BPs, I have to agree that your method is slightly out of the ordinary and that the "regular" conditions might work best for her. I think it's great that you look at what your BP likes, and that you adjust its environment accordingly, but 78 is probably a little on the low side for "average" (if you will, since no two BPs are the same) Ball Pythons.

I never said all BPs are the same...I said standard advice is standard for a reason. If your milage varies, yippy skippy for you. You gave your opinion then jumped on Lena for hers, then quickly refered her to your sig line...pot meet kettle.
I'm glad your methods work for you...that DOES NOT make them standard advice, and if this persons BP comes up with an RI, you have nothing invested but your opinion. Again, standard care is standard for a reason.
Well, I haven't been collecting for 16 years, but if you let that fool you into thinking I haven't done my homework, that is a mistake. BTW, how would I know that your advice was non-standard if I haven't done my homework? Shoots the logic train right off the track.
Granted, you do know what works for YOUR pet....darned if the OP wasn't asking about HIS, not YOURS.
Mods, sorry for the hijack and detour....I will take my punishment like a man.
Now back to your regularly scheduled thread!
