file sharing programs and windows firewall

k this is the deal, i download limwire and install it then i go through the windows control panel to allow this program through the firewall but when i open limewire it never connects to the server. is this because of windows firewall or am i doing something wrong?

if limewire sucks and there is a better easier file sharing program out there to use can someone direct me to it please??

Check out Cabos ... I have used this program for quite some time and it doesn't have all the random stuff that Limewire does. Only does what you need it to and nothing more or less.

Use Torrents. Download them and then "extract" them using bitcomet. if you want a walk through you can pm me. leave your phone number if you want.

Use Torrents.

BitTorrent is the way to go for P2P sharing. The way it works is this: you download a .torrent file of the thing you wish to download. www.mininova.org is a good site for finding torrents. Then you open the torrent file in a bittorrent client (I suggest utorrent or azureus, just google them). The .torrent file is not the files you wish to download, just a list of trackers and people who are currently downloading/sharing the file.

After opening the torrent file in the client it will start downloading. While you download the file you are also uploading pieces to other people. As long as the torrent is active you can get ultra-fast speeds. You only get a little bit of bandwidth from each person you connect to, but when you connect to hundreds of people it really adds up.

You will have to allow the client access through the firewall, and also may have to forward ports if you use a router. I would suggest using a static IP if behind a router and forwarding ports, otherwise if your IP changes the ports will no longer be forwarded to your computer, and you speeds will take a big hit.

It sounds complicated, but once you get it working it's very fast. And one final warning, whatever you choose to download is on YOU! Don't download any copywrighted or otherwise pirated material!

Great stuff...I just didn't feel like typing it all. The only things I would modify are that I prefer bitcomet as my client and I recommend the site www.torrentz.com as it searches multiple torrent sites, the best being mininova, piratebay, and btmon...anything else I don't usually trust, you will see what I mean. Some just don't seem so legit. Just a warning though, a lot of torrent sites will have porno ads showing porno or which ever face applies to you personally, (i.e. btmon but it is a good place to find torrents.)

Ive been having problems with utorrent lately. Also i still dont completely understand the seeder/leecher thing. My problem is (and its only started recently) is that when i choose a download the popup doesnt give me the option to download it only gives the option's- find, save, cancel, and when i save it i cant find the file on the computer and find doesnt do anything except bring up a windows error message. One of my buddies says its a browser problem, and i have no idea how to fix it. Any ideas?

this is a setting within your browser preferences. usually something like "Ask where to save file"
