whats the deal with this stuff? can i use this instead of a heat pad on the bottom of a tank? any tips on how to use it on a 10g or 20L aquarium?

It can be used instead of a het pad. But like a heat pad needs a Thermostat to be safe.

I feel like Flexwatt is much more convenient, and effective. Much more control with the flexwatt + a thermostat than if you had a heat pad.

I prefer flexwatt. It's easy enough to wire yourself and it's definitely cheaper than buying a bunch of heat pads especially when you're heating a rack. Like was already said you always want to have a thermostat with it but you should be using one with most if not all UTHs also.
