    help me choose my heat...

i have an adult bp in a 55gal tank. i'm currently running a uth w/ rheostat but my main heat comes from an 90w overhead heat lamp during day, a 75w red light for night. temps are fine but i'm considering switching to a ceramic heat emitter to help w/ the tank clutter. the only problem is i still need some sort of light for the day and i'd like to have a bit of light to watch at night.

    any suggestions?

Re: help me choose my heat...

A 55g tank is way too big for any but the largest adult BP. Also, tanks that tall are murder to regulate as far as temps and humidity. A 30 breeder or a 40 long are the biggest tanks you should use.
If you have no choice, tho, the 55 can work with some extra effort.

First off, the UTH should be your main heat source and to work properly should cover 1/4-1/3 of the bottom of the tank. With so large a tank, a second UTH (and second control method) might be needed to keep the gradient.
Lamps can be used for ambient temp boosts and for extra light, but they should hang at least 8-12" above the top and should use no higher than a 50-60 watt bulb. Otherwise you'll suck all the humidity right out. CHEs are a huge dry-out source.

To keep humidity up, you should foil treat the screen if you haven't already. That also helps keep the heat in the tank.

I use Current USA Red LED Lunar Lights in my 4 X 2 RBI cage and a red heat bulb for my 40g glass breeder tank.Natural light daytime for both.
