Snakes and cats?

Just got a new little kitten a couple weeks ago, and he's my first non-herp pet that I have in my house. Ever since I've gotten him, my whole snake room has been on edge...going into feeding mode and striking as soon as I slide open a tub. I know lots of members here have cats. Does this behavior diminish with time?

My cats don't get access to the snakes very often but I haven't noticed any such behavior when they do 'get together'.
Just be extra careful that none of your snakes can get out, cats will take advantage of that fact. I have an '08 here that managed to get out of her tub (my fault entirely), I woke up in the morning to her curled up outside my bedroom door with some nasty nasty cat bites all the way down her back. I don't know how she got to the cats but she did. I treated her and kept an eye on her, last week she shed and is mostly healed except for two larger wounds which I think will be good after the next shed. She took a mouse this last feeding day and is doing great. But what if the cats hadn't lost interest? What if she'd been smaller? What if more damage had been done? It's something I'll feel guilty about for a long time but still a danger if you have snakes and cats.

make sure you wash your hands after handling the kitten, and see if you can keep it out of the snake room.

i got both my cats after the snake and she could care less. Never any striking behavior. the cats are actually way more terrified of her.

I started scrubbing my hands really well after a particularly nasty bite from my JCP.

He's no longer allowed in the snake room after I caught him fiddling with the electrical wires. Hopefully everyone will calm down and return to normal.

I have 2 strictly indoor cats who have access to the whole house along w/ 3 indoor dogs who have access to the whole house. I haven't noticed mine behaving differently at all! I hold my snakes while the animals walk by or are sitting next to me too.

I guess it could be due to the fact that most of the animals were here first and they just adjusted in the beginning during the no handling in the first few weeks time? not sure tho? but either way, i imagine they will settle down.

I don't have cats but I do have ferrets. The ferrets are kept out of the snake room because they try to open the tubs....just something to think about. I would think that if a ferret could open a tub then a cat could.

No cats, but 3 dogs. I have no problem so far. The dogs go into the snake room (my bedroom), but only when supervised. They seem to have no interest in the snakes and vice-versa.

But do wash your hands. All the snakes need is a hair trigger, and you could get bit.

I've been wondering about this.. I think I eventually want to get a cat, and if I'm still living in an apartment like the one I have now I can't exactly have a "snake room". Right now I just keep my snake's cage next to my desk.

I only have one BP and my "snake room" is my bedroom, but I haven't had any conflicts or tensions caused by the presence of the cat. The cat is around when I have the snake out, but neither really notices the other. The only thing I would say is that the cat has rodent envy, so I make sure to lock him out of the room at feeding time. If he wants a rodent he has to kill it himself (we rent an old house and every once in a while I can hear them running in the walls).
