    Cleaning Agents

What appropriate chemicals to use to clean your BP tanks? When I worked at the pet shop we used bleach and bleach sprays for everything, even the fake plants and rocks.. looking back i wonder if that was a good idea becuase if some of the bleach stayed in the porous materials the heat in the tank can make it permeate the air.
Are there safer cleaning agents for the porous stuff that are still effective with Salmonella and other?

    Cheers,

    Josh

i use natural chemistry's cleaner... it's safe enough to use while the animals in the cage but uses biological agents to break down bacteria. i've used it for 2 years now and have not had any problems. i do clean the cages with a mild bleach solution every couple months just to be sure nothing's "growing in there".

Chlorhexidine Gluconate is what I use for regular cleaning. I do soak my tongues and hides in bleach for thirty minutes. I then wash the bleach off with water and a clean sponge. Once I no longer smell bleach, I soak them in water for about ten minutes. Probably overkill, but it works.

    Any Quaternary cleaner will work.

I use Lysol I.C., but its a little on the expensive side. Lasts forever though! There was just a thread like this within the last few weeks, you may want to search for it.

I use what is called A-33 which is a good disinfectant. It's used in vet offices and hospitals a lot. I like it because it comes in both wet and dry. You can find a solution just like it called Simple Green d Pro 3 in HomeDepot and Lowes stores.
