When I met my boyfriend in 1998 he was the crew chief of a race car at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut, shortly before that, he drove in the Bush North Series stock cars. Racing was his life. We spent many vacations on the road going from track to track. I enjoyed it but what I REALLY enjoyed was watching how much he LOVED it. It made him happy and that made me happy.
Fast forward to five years ago. During something very routine, Dan was severely injured. He is now paralyzed from the waist down. Not only did he have to fight the depression of losing his ability to do anything normally and he had to relearn how to do simple daily tasks - he could not race anymore. I think that bothered him more than not being able to use his legs.
Tonight, Dan came through the door so fast that I thought something was terribly wrong. After I picked my heart back up off the floor he told me about a new program for people with disabilities. Apparently the guy who started the program is an old racing buddy and they will be working together this coming race season.
He is going to get to drive a race car again! He is beside himself with joy. I have not seen him THIS happy in years.
Scares the bejesus outta me (I've seen s ome of the wrecks he's been in) but I think he's going to have a new lease on life. I am so happy for him.
Here's a video...
