Cypress Mulch
I've been reading around about different kinds of suggested substrates, and I've decided I'd like to try out cypress mulch. 3/4 of my snakes are in glass tanks with screen accesses, and I have a hard time keeping humidity near 50%. Has anyone else used this stuff? And could any of you tell me where I might get some?

Re: Cypress Mulch
Whatever you do dont get it from walmart or homedepot, reason being is its not 100%cypress, its a blend. If you wanted to go with cypress i suggest something like this....
http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=68&de=636264
Otherwise i would use aspen. Personally i prefer paper towels
good luck.

Re: Cypress Mulch
Hmm thank you for both the link, and the somewhat-recommendation for Aspen hehe. Why Aspen, if you don't mind me asking? Aaand, Ive been planning on putting humid hides in my tanks, so maybs I could just settle with the humid hides and not worry about the cypress mulch?

Re: Cypress Mulch
I suggested aspen because its safe to use as a substrate for reptile's, and cypress is questionable depending on the source. But just like cypress, aspen will release moisture into the enclosures air slowly through out the day creating humidity, but it wont look as wet as cypress does. Your just going to have to experiment to get your desired humidity. Good luck.
Hope this makes sense.

I use cypress. From HomeDepot too, my store carries 100% cypress no additives. I treat it with mite preventitive as I use it.

Re: Cypress Mulch
We use cypress for all of our snakes, and we love it!
You can find 100% cypress, but you have to search for it. Good luck!

Re: Cypress Mulch
Just went on a search for 100% cypress. The stuff at HomeDepot is not 100% cypress since I called the number on the bag to clarify. The guy was honest and said it was a mix and had pine in it. So the hunt continues.

I'm thinking of trying to get it on base, at the naval home and garden place. Haven't been there in a while but its like a gigantic warehouse. If I can find any there I'll let you know and maybs if you have any military friends you could try to find out if they have a similar home and garden center
