    Farm Living

I really really want to live on a farm one day. Well, I want to live on one now, but we are renting a two bedroom townhouse in Richmond and need to save up money for a down payment. I've been looking for fun, and I see all sorts of places, but they are so expensive. I want at least 2 acres, 4-5 is ideal. I want to be able to have a horse or two, but that is a luxury I'm willing to live without for a while. Mostly I want my own space and not be renting from anyone. I don't want to have to worry about having my animals and it being "against the lease". I want to be able to have chickens and goats.

So for those of you who have farms, show me some pictures. Give me something to look forward to. Hopefully I'll have enough for a small down payment in about 3-4 years.

I've heard it gets expensive. I used to live in Powhatan, VA and we had 3 horses. I loved it. I loved going out and caring for the horses. I never had complained about having to shovel poo or care for them in bad weather. We had rabbits too. I really miss living out there. I never really cared about being far away from movie theaters or malls. It was nice and quiet out there. Lots of work with the animals, but nice.

Yep, very few people enjoy cleaning out stalls and stuff! I do it every day. I spend quite a few hours a day out at my show barn taking care of my heifer...I will be sure to get some super sexy heifer pictures tomarrow( she will be all spiffed up).

Oh! I love cows! I've never had one myself, but I would love to have some. They are so beautiful. I went to the state fair last year (missed it this year) and I saw some cute little babies! I was unaware you could show cows. That sounds like fun!

Show cattle are a HUGE deal. You should look around. It is very pricey though. But is well worth it.

I live in Richmond. The only exposure to "farm life" around here is the state fair or if you drive out to the country. I would love to find out more about cows and showing. Do you have any links to some information sites?

    Re: Farm Living

Well, I live on a farm. We rent; hubby and I want to buy in the next 5 years, once we pay off some other things. it is a lot of work.. yet, not undoable, IMO. We have 2 horses and 5 chickens, and plan on adding some goats and maybe even a few bovines next year; our landlord wants to buy animals and have us look after them; that kinda thing. There is a farmer who rents acreage here and plants corn, hay, and straw crops. I do plan on selling one of the horses (have a prospective buyer!) and rescuing a pony and a mini horse with a foal. I like the idea of rescuing animals; since, say, you wanted to buy a goat. Check out local rescues; there are literally hundreds of goats, pigs, etc. for adoption in my area. It depends on if you want to get into breeding, etc though.
I will post pics of our area here as soon as I get a free moment (hard to do lately!)

    Re: Farm Living

All the animals that we would get for the farm would be rescues. I like the idea of rescuing animals. And you live in New York. My fiance and I were talking about where we'd like to live one day and New York came up as an option. How is it living in New York? Cost of living expensive, or not so much? And I never knew you could rent a farm.

    Re: Farm Living

I found a wonderful place! Its in NY, 4 bedrooms, 3 acres, gah! I want it! I'm wondering why they are selling it for so cheap though. I mean, its an old house, but you'd think with 3 acres and 4 bedrooms it be a bit more expensive, and it doesn't look that worn down either.

Its an hour drive to the nearest Barnes and Noble, so a bit of a drive, but I can always transfer there from here. Or I can get another job somewhere. I wish I could find a place like this.
