My AC croaked.
Yep. Central heat and air is great.. until it doesn't cool your house from the 95F heat. Oh my lord... it's sooo hot. I have fans set up to blow air in the most advantagous way to get cooler air to the snake room, and keeping the dogs cool enough. The lizards of course are loving it.
I have to call a AC repair place tomm morning, to see when they can look at it, if it's not tomorrow, I'll have to go get a window unit or something.
In the meantime.. I'll just melt.

Re: My AC croaked.
I have window units!
And our heating is radiators. Yay for a 1856 house!
An idea for getting cool air in the snake room, try turning the fan around. Put it in a window facing outside. It sucks out the hot air and leaves relatively cooler air inside.
Just a thought. ;]

Re: My AC croaked.
Ick, I hate not having AC. I only have a window unit in the living room though - so I too have fans staged throughout to get the cool air in other roooms... hopefully they get it fixed for you soon!

This may be what you meant by having the fans set up the most advantageous way, so ignore my rambling if you've already done this. A lot of people make the mistake when using fans of having them all blowing air in from outside. You need to have approximately an equal amount blowing out as you do blowing in to keep the air moving.
If you have a multi-story house, you can cool it by having fans blowing IN on lower levels, and blowing OUT on the top level. Since the hot air rises, this gets the hottest air out of your house.
Another good trick is to blow in at windows that are in the shade, and out at windows that are in the sun. This often means reversing it halfway through the day.
If you know which direction the prevailing winds are blowing, set up the fans to blow the air in the same general direction the wind is blowing outside.

Re: My AC croaked.
That sucks. The same thing happened to me the begining of July, and it's still not fixed. We have a 30 year old central air/heater unit, and the compressor went out. Some new law about freon won't let them just replace the compressor, so we need a whole new unit for $4k. I've been melting all summer, laid off and stuck in a humid, 86 degree condo. We aren't allowed to put in window units.

Re: My AC croaked.
I have a portable AC unit in my snake room. It has it owns Tstat set at 84 so it is just a fan until it gets hot then the AC compressor kicks on. I keep beardies in there too and their enclosures tend to heat up the room which is great in the winter but HOT in the summer. It averages 90-105 until end of Sept where I live in the Valley.
Hope you get it fixed soon.

Re: My AC croaked.
It was repaired today. I was happy to find out it was a blown capacitor(guy said lightning surge possibly) and a wire was burnt out going to the compressor(same cause). So it wasn't horribly bad(not in the htousands to repair) and it was repairable.
I did set the fans up to blow air in from the cooler side of the house, and out the other side(yup did have to swap the fans halfway through the day!).
Now the house is slowly cooling off, and I'm off to shower in cold water, since I also had to help dig the big truck out of sand pit in my road when he tried to leave.
Thanks for the well wishes!!!
