Next Month Is The End Of The World
Well, maybe.
New York Times article: Asking a Judge to Save the World, and Maybe a Whole Lot More
Long story short; the world's largest proton accelerator is set to go online next month. Some fear the colliding protons could open black holes which could do anything from destroy the earth, to destroy our atmosphere, which would basically kill us all, too.
These people are in a minority, but there are enough of them to make the news.
Do the research for yourself. It is an interesting topic that just may affect your life. But I sure hope not!
Questions for dialogue:
1) When it comes to massive-scale scientific endeavours that could, potentially, affect the entire world, who should get the final 'say' on if they should be allowed or not?
2) What are your personal feelings about this imminent experiment?
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

I am not sure what to think about it.
I know its totally Fictional, but after reading Angels and Demons it does kind of worry me a little. However I don't let it scare me, its completely out of my control.

An Indian woman committed suicide because of it.
It is frightening to think how this could play out..

1) This is a really tough question. I don't think hysterical people who don't really know what they're talking about should be allowed to shut down scientific experiments. However...if the fate of the entire world is truly at risk, certainly governments should be allowed to step in and shut it down. But who in "government" knows enough about such advanced theories to give a pass or fail to such a request? And which "government" should have a say? The country that it is being hosted in? Or any country, because it's the entire world potentially "on the line" with some massive scale experiment?
2) My personal feelings, based on what little I've read on this project....sounds kind of scary to me. Not that I'm afraid of the entire world getting sucked into a pinhole sized black hole....but I sure wouldn't want to live anywhere within 100 miles of that thing when it is being used (really big booms come to mind). As for the "fate of the world" fears....my comfort lies in my faith that the God who created this world will not allow it to be destroyed until He is ready. And when He is ready, then nothing man does or doesn't do is going to make one whit of difference.

Re: Next Month Is The End Of The World
I've been following that for a while now because my roomie is a science geek. They actually started it up this morning and had success with whatever it was they were trying to do. However, they don't perform their "big" experiment until October 21, 2008. The theory of black holes is just silly. From what I've been reading about it, the worst that could happen would be that some sort of beam of energy might break loose from the machine, but because it is underground would be lost in the rocks with no ill effect. This project has been in the making for a LONG time, with scientists from all over the world collaborating on it. I'm sure that if they thought there was any real danger, they would stop and recalibrate or reevaluate. Whichever.
Personally, however, I don't feel that we should be doing this. I don't agree with most of what goes on in the field of science today, really. It makes me nervous and uncomfortable. Heart transplants and things like that seem so unnatural to me. However, I'm sure that if I was faced with the decision myself, I would consider it. I just don't see how it could be so important to know so much about the big bang theory that we need to recreate it. I think people should stop worrying so much about space and realize that we are here and now, and we should take care of our own planet before trying to figure out how to get to others.
