Question about pregnant woman and snakes

I just found out about 5 days ago that my wife and I are going to have a baby. I was wondering if there were any health reasons that would cause me to get rid of my snake? Is it ok for her to handle the snake or even be around it? The snake does have it's own room but I was just curious and I figured who would know better than you guys...Please let me know....Thanks Joe

As long as you practice good hygene when handling your snake (washing hands before anything else after handling or cleaning) then I see no reason why she couldn't handle the snake or be around it.

    Congrats on the baby!

Yep -- been there done that -- just be sure that you practice good salmonella prevention hygiene through the pregnancy and yearly childhood years and you'll be good to go

    Congratulations!

You have a MUCH higher chance of getting salmonella from chicken at a restaurant than getting it from a snake.

But even still, if you wash your hands, you'll be fine. :]

People should wash their hands regardless of if they have snakes. I imagine snake keepers have better health just becuase they do practice propper hand washing more often then not. Yay baby and yay snakey!

Ditto! Personally I think a snake is a great pet to have when you have a baby...no barking, no need to walk him when you're getting so little sleep and someone to keep you company when you're up half the night.

Re: Question about pregnant woman and snakes

Being pregnant wont increase her chance of catching anything more than being not pregnant. Just that oviously th consequences are greater. Ive rescued 3 pets from woman who give them away becuase they become pregnant, never made sense to me. Your wife should just take care to wash her hands. I have ALOT of pets i cant imagine getting rid of any of them becuase of pregnancy.
