    quick breeding question

Going to breed 2 of my girls this year as kind of a "trial run." I plan to start putting them together either October 1st or November 1st... I think the males will be in for 4 days, out for 4 days.

Anyways, my quick question is that one of the females I plan to breed is 1900 grams and is going to shed within a couple days. Should I leave her shed in her tub? should I throw it in her boyfriends tub? or should I just throw it away?

Thought I read somewhere to put it in with the boyfriend...

    Re: quick breeding question

4 days is a good rest, but a little long for the pairing ... if the male don't get r done in 24 hours, the two additional days won't help at all.

If you're not planning on pairing the males up with the girls until October 1st or November 1st, throw the shed away ... and I wouldn't even worry about sheds until you start pairing up to see what happens ... there's a really good chance that you won't need to do anything with sheds.

Remember, it's a long breeding season ... no need to get anxious .. you have lots of time to figure stuff out.

    Hope this helps.

Don't get anxious... right.. got it.... LOL That is impossible!!!!

Thanks for the help! I will trash the shed.

    Adam,

for a new bee like me.. who is just doing a test run planning to breed 2 females with 2 different males... what rotation should I use? How many days should the male be in and how many days out? these will be "married pairs" in other words each male will only be breeding with one female.

    This is the planned pairing:

cinny male X dark normal female

    and

Spider male X Light reduced female

    Re: quick breeding question

I don't think anyone can tell you what you "should do" ... everyone has their own way and finding "your way" is one of the best parts about this hobby in my opinion. I know a lot of different breeders and everyone has their "own way" of doing things ... some things that work for one guy/gal, just don't work for another.

What I like to do is place a male into a females tub for 24 - 48 hours. If you see a lock right away, as soon as they seperate, rest the boy ... if you don't see any locks but the boy is courting the girl like crazy, wait the entire 48 hours ... if they are together for a day and not doing anything (like laying at opposite ends of the enclosure) take the boy out and try again in a week.

After a lock or 24-48 hours of cooling, since it's just one boy per female, rest him for a week and then pair up again.

It only takes a single copulation to make a female gravid, so when you're breeding one to one, you don't need to hammer them together ... it'll happen if your environment is correct.

I know some people that pair up one to one and leave the boy in with the girl for the entire season ... that might work better for you, but it's something that I have zero experience with and therefore not something that I could be helpful with.

Remember, this is supposed to be fun ... play around ... try different things ... if you get eggs, great! ... if you don't, you know what not to do next year.

Best words ever! It's so good to have you back Adam.

Mike, it's an exciting thing to go into your first breeding year. I can't even begin to tell you how it feels to pull open a tub and find your female coiled on a clutch of beautiful big white eggs.

We didn't have a successful first year here. Like Adam said, we re-assessed somethings this year, did more research, talked to Adam and a few other experienced folks, tweaked our routines a bit and bingo....18 eggs laid from 3 females, 18 eggs hatched out.

You think you're stressed now? Just wait until you have your first eggs in the incubator! A day will never seem so long, you will find yourself having nightmares about power failures and you will seriously decide that being OCD is a darned fine way to run your life. But then the little heads pop out of the eggs and you fall in love......

    Re: quick breeding question

I have animals locking right now as we speak and another ready to lay at the end of the month /begining of next. I let the animals tell me when to pair them. I have girls that lay in FEB and some in October so you never know. Once a girl has laid for me I use her timetable not mine.

Everyone has their own way, as long as you get eggs thats what counts
