Good thermometer?

Hi,

Well the model number on that page leads me here to finally find a picture.

And based on the picture I would say no.

This is the type you should try and find - though not at those prices.

Most of the time people buy them at wallmart for $12 apparently so that may be a good place to start.

The idea is the probe can be safely used inside the tank and hides as it is weatherproof.

The base station reads humidity so can be used to check that as well.

I would go with the one Dr Del recommended. I recently switched over to them and they're great. It reads the temps on both the cool side and warm side, while telling you the humidity. I got mine at Wal Mart for $12 or $13 each.

I bought the AcuRite that reads temp and humidity - it is mounted right inside the center of my viv.

One question, how does that thing determine what each side of the viv is temp wise - I find that amazing.

Well he's how I do it,

I place the base unit on the cool side at ground level - that reads the ground temp and humidity at that point. The probe I put inside the hot end hide where the snake would be.

Once those temps etc have settled and I have made a note of them I switch the base unit to the ground level on the hot side and the probe into the cool end hide and wait for those readings to settle too.

I also like to place the probe under the substrate to see the hottest temp the snake could be exposed to if it burrowed down.

Then, once I know what the various temps are I can start tweaking.

I like to make sure the snake never gets exposed to really hot temps so I adjust the heat source till the hottest part (with a UTH that is generally on the glass/ tub base under the hot end hide) till it is around 94f at most then adjust the depth of the substrate till the surface of the substrate inside the warm end hide reads between 90-93f.

If you have a second UTH on the cool end then I would also check the temps under the substrate there just to be safe but it is unlikely to be as hot as the warm end if things are set up ok.

For the cool end temps inside the hide I aim for 80-83f as it isn't a great idea to let that get too cold.

How are you controling the heaters again? That affects how I place the thermometers after the initial dialing in stage.

That doesn't have a hygrometer in it though...

I use the Acurite that Derek showed, but I get mine at Lowe's for 12 dollars each. Sometimes they have to order them in, so if you don't see one on the shelf, just ask them!
