Boa breeding question
I have read like 6 diff articles on breeding them...
but i still havnt found the answer to a few of my questions...
1) Can i use one male with more than one female?
---- I read that the male stays in with the female for a while, but not one that said if i could have one male to two females... so yeah
2) Is there an average to the babies for certain sized females?
---- Like, how many is max for a 5 foot female vs. a almost 8 foot female...
~ because i dont want to breed my big girl if she will throw 40 some odd babies in her first litter... but if i can only breed one, im breeding him to my small girl... so i just want to know what to expect... (i will prolly just breed one, because i DO NOT want to over load myself with babies lol)
3) attitude wise, i have read that females are vicious and protect their babies like crazy.... personally, i dont want to be slammed by my big female, are these chances like 100 % that she will be pissy after she gives birth?
3.1) on that note, what are the chances of the female staying mean? or do they go back to normal?
4) i have read that the gestation for boas can be hard to be 100% on, is this true?
Thanks! so far thats all that has come to mind, any other tips/help would be great, i know i have some time, but i really want to be totally ready and prepared
and i promise, im not going to breed them if its something i cant handle... thus why im asking questions

Re: Boa breeding question
AH! I'm glad I got here before people started answering....I'm going to tack on a question of my own.
5) Are there means to find others in the area, for those of us who aren't breeders, but would like to breed ours without buying a second just for that purpose? In other words...are there online boa dating sites? (I just adopted a 100% het of albino)

I've used one male with 2 females before a few times. It seems to be easier if the male is very mature (older) so he doesn't get worn out. I wouldn't try it with a 18 month to 2 year old male or anything. The thing to be careful is to make sure you're paying VERY close attention ot the females. You don't want to miss the "window of opportunity". It's not something I would try the first year breeding. I cycle all my males in and out with their "match" for the season. It spurs breeding results and lets the "anticipation" build up for another round.

Their really isn't an "average" per say, but the bigger the female- the more babies you'll most likely get. My big 8 foot girl (weighs about 25 lbs or more) usually shoots me about 20-21 babies a year, but my second biggest girl, about 7 feet (weighs about 18-20 lbs), usually gives me 21-25 babies a year. I think it's a good idea to breed the bigger girl the first year though. The bigger they are, generally the easier they take the pregnancy.

Take it for granted the female will be mighty protective of her babies after giving birth. For rare is it that a female is nice, but some aren't as mean as others is a better way to put it. The will go back to their normal selves usually fairly quickly, but some may take up to a month. I snake hook the mom out and put her in a large solid-colored tub with a warm and wet large towel draped over her (so she can slither through it and clean herself off a little) while I'm cleaning the cage and taking care of the babies. I then THOROUGHLY clean the cage and disenfect it. I then clean it again. I will let it air out for an hour or so while I thaw out a nice juicy ratty for the momma. In she goes to her new clean cage with a fat rat following in after her. I'll wait a 4 days or so and feed her again. Repeat that again. Then wait a week and feed her again. This usually puts them at ease and the calm down and go back to normal acting.

It's not easy. A few here will vouch how one boa of mine completely screwed me all up! lol. I was way off the mark, by like 30 days or more. Usually, you look for the ovulation and tack on 115 days from that day. Some go by the Post Ovulation Shed (POS) date and tack on 104 days. I've used the POS method before and (with the exception of the one mentioned above) I am usually within 3-5 days (give or take) of the due date. This year I will be going by BOTH the methods because of the oops I had with said-female above. lol
Hope this helped ya.
