Re: pine bedding
Yes, but I don't recommend pine shavings for use with rodents. It contains many the same oils and phenols like cedar (just not as much), and can lead to respiratory distress.

Yes I know what many people say, but it IS true that pine irritates the lungs of rats, and can and does lead to respiratory distress and death.
As it is, I'm giving out my opinion. I don't recommend pine shavings. You can do whatever you feel.

From what I know Connie is correct!
However, I use pine and newspaper and I've not had any problems with respiratory infections or distress. I do not keep companion rats and most of the babies are fed off so maybe they just don't get big enough for me to notice a problem. (I probably just jinxed myself)
Our rats are not kept in the house so smell is not an issue and pine is more economical for us to use.
