    Woody pet?

Is Woody Pet ok for a ball python? I'd like to find a bedding that can absorb the thrice daily water spills from my friend's snake. I don't like him sitting in water or soaked bedding.... does anyone know if woody pet is ok? I know for sure it absorbs.

I dont know if its ok or not...but why don't you simply switch water bowls. If the problem is he keeps tipping it over...you can easily just nip the problem in the bud with a different bowl. Even if its not your snake, just pick up a dog dish with a bigger base than top...or something heavier. Duh.

Woody pet is made well for horses and works well.
However, I don't know that they took into all the considerations for snakes when they advertise it for them.

It says it's very fine with sawdust. This to me seems dangerous as it could be 'dusty' and lead to respiratory problems for snakes when it may avoid them for horses.

I have been unable to find what it is specifically made out of.. which bothers me.. because if it's made out of pine it could be dangerous to snakes.

No personal experience, but that is what I found.

    Re: Woody pet?

Ah bummer. I am sure it has pine. It is made of wood and pine is pretty cheap.

The water bowl IS a heavy deep one. He doesn't tip it exactly. He jumps in and has a pool party and makes a tidal wave or something. I am going to go shopping for a lidded one with a hole so he can go in but that requires a bit of travel on my part and I'd rather go down to the local feed store and grab some absorbent bedding if that would be a solution....

If you get ahold of the stuff around your horses, check the ingredients.

    Re: Woody pet?

I'm pretty sure the Woody Pet is made out of pine. I KNOW the very similar product, Equine Fresh, is made out of pine. The processing supposedly removes the aromatic oils or whatever it is, but I still don't think I'd put my snakes on it.

I agree that an easier solution would be to do something with the water bowl. If the problem isn't so much tipping it, but he gets in it and splashes, maybe if you just didn't fill it so full?

    Re: Woody pet?

I use Equine Fresh all the time...for my rats.

In its pellet format it would work fine - with no issues (I have used it for my corn snakes for over a year)

But...when it breaks down (like in major water spills and such) it quickly turns into saw dust. Wet it sticks to everything and dry is dusty...so I would NOT recommend it in a snake cage where lots of water get spilled (like in your case). As this dust (wet or dry) will get in your snakes heat pits and they will breath it in.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Woody pet?

dont fill the water bowl so full, fill it half way and that should prevent spills from happening...

    Re: Woody pet?

Thanks all for the advice. The bowl is only filled about a third of the way up and he still makes a giant mess. I think the solution will be a lidded bowl with a hole in the lid. Silly snake...
