    Talking Trip to the Vet

so i decided to take my Balls in to the vet since one was store bought .they seem relativly healthy i just like gettin a experts opinion.
anyways they do a fecal float on kaa ,and she says theres mites init?( had no lilith poo) ive checked him thourouly ever since i got him ,and never seen one mite, or tick or anything on him ,or her for that matter, and ive kept there substrate fresh and cleaned everything once a week yadda yadda so on
anyways i go for the deworm also since im there just to be safe
they both get shots and panacur ,then they give me the second dose to give em in 3 weeks (way cool ,no follow up)
i get home and start scrubbin everything down and gettin out the mite off,and bleach, yadda yadda thinkin the whole time how impossible it is they coulda had mites, then it hits me , i bet she just said that to make sure i cleaned there enclosures at least once in there life!
so i go for , white newsprint till i can see anything, and lillith (my female) wont have anything to do with it she looks for a way out sits in her water bowl then looks for a way out then sits between her water bowl and hide log she will not cross the white paper
so i inspect her again still see no mites then break down and grab a block of substrate and use boiling water to expand it dump it down and she goes right to her hide box lol

    Re: Trip to the Vet

Somehow I seriously doubt that the vet told you that your snake had mites to make sure you clean your enclosure, and medicated your snake un-necessarily.

Are you sure she said mites, and not some other parasite, because mites aren't internal and detected in fecal floats. Was this an excotics vet, or one that primarily sees dogs and cats?

And btw, store bought would be the first snakes I'd take in for fecal tests, since most pet stores by captive hatched babies in lots, which are more likely to test positive for internal parasites, than captive bred babies.

yah she said mites wich was why i kinda wonderd and it was a fecal float to weird and she was a herp specialist, i doubt she woulda said it to cept for that ive never seen mites on any of my snakes
and store bought (lilith ) was why i went Kaa was from a breeder but figured id take em both in after quarantine just to get em checked out but anyways if there were mites there gone now and both snakes passed there exams with an A (well Kaa was a lil chubby but thats my fault no hiS)

    Re: Trip to the Vet

Fecals can have dead mites if the animals the snake has been eating are parasitized. The mites are dead, so it's not a big deal. I've found obliterated pinworm eggs from my mice in some of my snake's fecals, but that doesn't mean the snakes have pinworms.

Just curious how much did your vet visit cost? I have a store bought ball and I havnt taken it to the vet yet. Im short on cash so I dont really want to go unless its cheap.

    Re: Trip to the Vet

they charged me 150.00 for both snakes they just called me back to see how they were doin kaa,s fine but lillith is still of feed and really stressed out they said probably the ivermectin shot
so dewormed demited and general welfare check 150. isnt so bad considering this lady went to collage for this and im a hobbiest
i wish lilith would eat though but its only been 3 weeks since she ate and 2 weeks since since the vet
so if you live near kirkland washington and have snakes(non venemous) turtles, lizerd,s birds, ferrats, cats, rats, dogs ,check em out "eastside avian & exotic animal medical center" 425-821-6165 or www.eaeamc.com
