    New to BP keeping

Hello everybody, greeting from a newbie......

Well, after keeping several pets which I unfortunately had to get rid of with the birth of my son ( Lots of hospital trips ) i'm ready to take on this great animal. Why snake! Well itwont care so much if i run to the hospital for a few days :-) Not fair for so many other animals!

    Just a couple of questions:
Have just bought a 48x24x24 presswood cage with front sliding glass doors, vents in the back and two holes in top with mesh for lamps! The baby i'm getting is of course going to be in a smaller container until it get's settled but want to get his/her future home ready. So my question basically is, what do i need?......well i know the essentials but looking for recommendations: which kind of thermostat, bulbs (have the fixtures good for 150W, ceramic) can you add heating pad even though the bottom is of wood? substrate, etc etc. all in all a shopping list

So let me hear what your setup consist of?

    Welcome to the site!

Yes, that thread shows my 12qt tub setup which would be great for a young BP. The bigger cage won't see use for a while, but it's great that you got it while you could. Also, Kudos for looking things up and getting them setup before you get the snake! More and more people are doing it and it's great!

    Cool thanks,

Yeah like to be prepared you know. Don't want my new BP asking what the *&^# i'm doing

Can you answer me one question though! When he/she does get to the size where the new home will be suitable how would you install UTH when the floor of the tank is presswood?

I do not think you can... you would need to modify it and add a plastic "window" to the bottom... kinda like a glass bottomed boat so that you can transmit heat through and still keep the snake off the UTH.

Check out the caging forum, there may be some threads in there that deal with this issue already.

    Re: New to BP keeping

Missed the part about posting pics... mine are sinfully boring, but are thoroughly functional (keep in mind your snake does not care what it looks like). As long as you provide your snake with proper temp and humidity you are good to go, as well as appropriate technology and cage furniture.

Does not mean that you cannot be creative and make it a great looking viv as well, but vivs can be a harder to maintain (but again, it can be done and done well).

    200g babe in a shoebox.

    Another snake...

An enclosure for a very shy inconsistent feeding male.

And yes, that is a soapdish the snake is peeking out of. And no, her eyes are not that buggy in real life. I think she was surprised?

Nice looking setup(s) you got there..........3rd one down is looking like what i have for starter.

Well i'm not trying to make it look like a million bucks but When i had my Iguanas my cage took up a hole 18 foot wall, side to side..........love presentation the hardest part about that was getting the three in the house to go in the cage, haha.....

got plenty of time to build it up, trying to cramp it as much as possible so the lucky little one can feel safe when ready!

    Thanks for your time

    Re: New to BP keeping

Bruce, that corn pic is absolutely adorable!

Most people install the heat source inside the wooden cage and then place plexiglass or vinyl flooring over it and seal the edges with silicone. A hole or vent is left under the heat pad for air flow/cord/probe placement.

Here's the inside of my juvie tub:

Of course, that's for a corn... but setup is setup.
