Quarentine and activity questions bout new RTB

    Two questions

My red tail boa is now 3 1/2 months old. I've had him for a month now. He eats amazingly well (never turned down a f/t) and has never hissed or struck at me. Hes a little curious but I've read here that they can be. When I first got him I treated his tank for mites and havn't seen any signs of them so I think were ok on that. No signs of RI or any other problems I've seen on here either.

Question 1: Is 1.5 months long enough for quarentine? I have a Ball python and my new animal plastic cages are supposed to arrive in a few days now. Would it be risky to put them together now? After Rambos little escape (the name is fitting...) I moved him out of the tub into a locking top aquarium, which as many of you know are extremely difficult to maintain temperatures in. I've read about people doing it for 3 months but I got the snake from the same breeder as my ball and I know they take really good care of their animals.

Question 2: The boa is rediculously active. Maybe I'm just used to my 3 year old ball python Ballsley who will just sit in my lap for an hour but taking Rambo out I have to constantly tend to him. Hes constantly moving around, trying to crawl into the couch, under the bed, etc. I can hardly watch tv because I have to pay so much attention to him! Is this normal in a RTB? Will he relax a little when he matures or should I rename him Curious George?

Re: Quarentine and activity questions bout new RTB

Well, regarding the QT issue, I purchased all three of my boas from terrific and reputable and respected breeders and will keep them away from my ball pythons for 6 months. I have read, and thank goodness have never experienced, that boas can be asymptomatic with IBD for at least 6 months. I feel as though I am protecting my ball pythons from this infectious disease that would kill them quickly.

I feel that if I had not purchased the boas from such awesome breeders, my QT time would be more akin to a year. I always handle the ball pythons first and then the boas, etc etc (usual QT procedures) and I also have them house in completely separate areas of the house.

Regarding your boas level of curiosity, all I can say is all three of my boas have different personalities, though all are more curious and active than the ball pythons. One boa is chill and laid back, one boa is snarky and Queen of all she surveys, and one boa is a little shy and reserved.

Since your boa is so little, it is likely that he will go through many changes as the two of you get to know each other and as you continue to learn his body language. It's a fun journey- enjoy

I think that 1.5 moths for QT is way too short, make it 3 months at least.
About activity, boas tend to be MUCH more active than BP's, all of my 9 boas are, can sit and no nothing but handleing because of that..
