Couple GTP Questions
I have just a few questions about GTP's.
First of all, are all hatchlings yellow or red, and they become green as they become adults?
Also, I have looked at what localities I could find substantial pics and info on, and it seems that Aru is the one that has the least inherent dorsal markings. If someone could clear this up for me, that would be great. Also, how much, if at all, does the price swing based on locality?
Apart from that, bp.net doesnt have a caresheet for GTP's, so any general tips or advice before we consider getting one would be great. I am going to try to find info on other sites as well, but I wanted to get some insider advice from current GTP owners.
Thanks

Re: Couple GTP Questions
I think you should start reading this: http://www.finegtps.com/Care_sheets.html
When you finish, ready Greg Maxwell´s book (the caresheet above is a short version).
After that, you will have a good idea about GTP husbandry, locales, etc.
I can´t help yu with the prices, because I´m on the other side of the Atlantic.

Re: Couple GTP Questions
First off, yes. All Green Tree Pythons are some shade of red or yellow as neonates. They can be anywhere for maroon to light red. I've seen some that appear purple as well rarely, brown. Locality can influence which color they are as neonates.
I am going to break down the localities I remember. Keep in mind, this is all generally how they appear and two specimens from the same locality can differ quiet a bit. The prices I am adding are off memory and current KS pricing for young specimens and can vary either way.
Aru: Neonates are yellow. They generally go through their color change quicker than most other localities. Adults are a dark green, white dorsal scales. They are considered a docile locality. $400 +/-.
Lereh: Yellow or Red Neonates. Adults are green with a nice blue or yellow dorsal stripe. $350 +/-.
Sorong: Generally yellow as neonates. As adults they are bright green with yellow speckling. Sometimes have a Blue dorsal stripe and or blueish patterning on the side. As far as temperament, they are considered on of the more docile localities. $500 +/-.
Biak: Red or Yellow neonates. Considered on of the more aggressive localities. Adults generally have a splotchy color/pattern. Wide variety of color shades. $300 +/-.
Wamena: Neonates are generally red rather than yellow (sometimes even brown or almost black). They are generally a darker green as adults than most localities. Generally have a blue dorsal stripe and can rarely appear almost "calico" with black speckling. $400 and up.
Merauke: Neonates are yellow. Adults are a bright green with a white dorsal stripe. They are generally considered docile. $350 +/-.
Arafak: Neonates are dark shades of red. Adult are dark green with little to no blue. Rare locality, haven't seen them offered for sale.
Canary: These guys can be anywhere from a bright yellow to green. They can change colors over night. Definitely one of my favorite localities. $700 and up.
Nabire: Neonates are generally yellow. Adults generally have a heavier white influence than most localities. I've never seen these guys offered, so I have no idea on pricing.
Manakwari: Yellow neonates. They look similar as the Sorong locality. Generally considered to have much more blue than most localities. They are also considered a docile locality. $350 +/-.
Jayapura: Neonates can be Yellow or Red. Adults generally have quiet a bit of Blue in their pattern with yellow and white dorsal scales. $400 +/-.
Here is an excellent Green Tree Python care sheet. Spurce Nubble Care Sheet
Hope this helped and good luck!

Re: Couple GTP Questions
I was in the same boat as you a while back, really wanted one so i researched everything i could books internet info. So i finally broke down and spent the money on one, well now 2. The most important thing that i have found is purchase an established animal, they grow alot slower than most snakes so even at 1 or 2 years old most of them are still very small, if you find a good breeder they will even assist you in purchasing an animal that is calmer than most and does good with handling. I found that they are not as hard to keep as some books say, nor are they as little maintnance as a ball python. Read the care sheet in the above post then check out there available animals page, and there guarantee. The price is a lil higher than you can get others for, but remember you do get what you pay for. One of mine came from them and she is amazing, and just what they said, calm enjoys being out. They are also very helpful people if you have any ? Just my .02
