Does my male want to breed?

As of late, my normal male has been cruising around his tub and knocking stuff around. Ive peeked in his mouth too see if it could be a RI making him restless, but his mouth looks healthy. No excess mucus and it is a light pink color.

Also his enviroment hasn't change at all in almost a year. He has been in the same tub, in the same rack for almost a year now.

He is still eating as well.

Then this idea hit me. He is definitely a male and he is definitely of breeding weight and age.(1.5 years 1200g) It is also summer in Florida, which means every day around mid day it rains and I mean pours.

Could this summer rain thing be triggering him to want to breed? Any other Floridans experience this?

I know some breeders go by when the snakes want to breed, but I still thought summer breeding was uncommon.

You may have better luck posting your question in the bp breeding forum.

I guess through the lack of help here I'll go elsewhere.

Re: Does my male want to breed?

I thought they bred in fall when the temps dropped a bit more, not in the heat of summer. There are lots of articles discussing how to get them ready to breed and it seems to involve dropping the night temps a bit.

I don't think he wants to breed, I think maybe something else is going on.

Less and less people believe the "cooling" idea and more and more are going over to thinking, Barometric pressure is what they go by, or rain. I'll just start emailing people in FL that breed.

Re: Does my male want to breed?

    Jeff,

In my experience with that kind of behavior, all I can say is, plop him in with a female, and see what happens.

    Summer breeding does happen.

I have breedings going on currently as of today.

BUT! I can't particularly speak to your snake roaming around indicative of him wanting to breed..

Re: Does my male want to breed?

I would breed him if I had a proper sized female.

I appreciate the response and insight. Ill just keep eye on him, but in the meantime I think I still wanna email Greg Graz and Mark at Gulf Coast.

I am moving shortly so I will also try him out in a bigger cage, when the time comes. He has always been in a slightly bigger cage(32qt his whole life) and maybe his roaming and hanging out by the front could be indicitive of him wanting more space.

Re: Does my male want to breed?

...this can mean many things, but yes, sometimes males will roam their cages looking for a female to breed. Do you have a female in a cage near him? You have to be careful as sometimes males will go crazy and rub their noses on cage fronts. I have had to move females into a completely separate room to get a male to calm down...they've got a great sense of smell
