Ikea Closet as a snake rack?

Im looking to build a rack in a couple months and I had seen on one of the "show your rack" threads a guy built a rack made out of an Ikea closet.

I have found the brand (Pax) and such but I was just wanting others thoughts. It uses its own tubs from Ikea and they seem to be good demensioned tubs.

So here are some of my questions:

    1. Is this a good idea?
    2. Do you think getting the closet in a diff color(finish) makes a diffrence as I dont really like the white?
    3. Would using flexxwat still be okay?

Here are some pictures of the units. You get the shell then add shelves were you need it.

    So the shell:

    The tubs:

    Thanks for any input.

Those tubs are $$$$$$$. I bet it will end up costing a lot. You might be able to just buy an AP economy for the same or not much more when its all said and done.

Or build one out of melamine for a fraction of the price. I wouldn't drop that kind of dough on that if it was me. I'd build one for really cheap, or spend the money on a commercial one..

But if you do go that route the color doesn't matter and flexwatt would be perfect.

Ya the tubs are also sold at Ikea without the lid and roller thing for like 7 or 8 bucks. So its still more then say a steralite but I just want a nice looking rack. Im going to back to ikea and look at all the stiff again.

But thanks so much for the replies everyone!

The shelving unit might be okay but wow they do want a fair bit for those tubs. Personally I'd be taking along my measuring tape and seeing if I could locate Sterlite, RubberMaid or Iris tubs at another store that would fit. Also measure the actual shelving unit itself and see if you can find one just like it elsewhere since I've seen ones pretty similar in the range of $40 or less at most major department stores. Never hurts to check.

It should be fine to lay flex on. If you aren't sure though personally I'd phone Rich at Reptile Basics and tell him what it's made of (it will be listed on the box it comes in). He'll let you know if it's a safe product to lay a heating source against. When we built our racks I wasn't sure about the hardboard we used as the backing board but a quick phone call to Rich laid my worries at rest. The man really knows his stuff LOL.

Re: Ikea Closet as a snake rack?

Ya I would love to use Iris tubs because there high quality and clear. But those and steralit ar like 23" and these shelves are like 22 and 3/8" so it won't work. Ima still check measurmenrtss when I go. Im even going to bring a 32qt steralite I have and see how it fits. I was just afraid of having a 23" long tub in a 23" space. Seemed like id be a problem with snakes maybe/possibley getting out. What are your guys thoughts about that?

Maybe I can rig up one of those little stoper systems with a dowl in the front of a tub. I dunno still trying to work it all out. Lol.

    Thanks,
    Ryan
