    FEED ME!! (pics)

This year a pair of mockingbirds have decided to establish a nest in our smaller flowering pear tree. It has been really neat to be able to see these babies up close. So the other day, while the parents were away from the nest, I decided to grab my camera and take a few shots of them. I had my husband keeping an eye out in case either of the parents came back. Has anyone ever been attacked by a mockingbird?? Definitely not fun!! LOL

Just to give you an idea, I am 5'6" and all I had to do was reach up and through the branches to take these shots. Why they decided to set up their nest here and not in the much larger pear trees about 10 feet away I have no idea. We did have a few disputes between the robins and the mockingbirds in our yard a few weeks ago, so maybe that is why they chose this tree instead????

    Anyway on to the pics!!

    They are sooo adorable!!

Thanks for looking!! Hope you enjoyed them!!

Very cool, are you going take pics throughout their "journey" into adulthood?

    Re: FEED ME!! (pics)

Okay so I finally got the pics uploaded. And I have a little story to go with yesterdays pics! (just a warning this update is a little long..Sorry!!)

While I was taking pics of the nest, and looking out for the parents at the same time. I got these shots. Not the best, but again I am reaching up into the tree and then taking the shots so I am not aiming, just hoping that I take some decent pics. Here are a few of them.

    They are getting so big!!

So at this point I take my shots and then I was bummed because it looked like I had only one baby left. We do check everyday from our window, but it can be hard to tell how many are in there.

So my kids and I were about to leave them in peace (by now I see the parents perched on the roof of the house next door). Then we heard a rustling and I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. That's when we saw this cutie.

If you notice in the second pic, those are my kids' hands outstretched to the little baby. The baby then basically hopped into my daughter's hands, which caused me to forget all about taking any more pics. So after a bit of fussing over the baby, at this point my kids were like "Can we keep it? It's sooooooo cute.", I finally reached up and put it back into the nest. Yes, the best thing to do is to leave them alone, but with the stray cats around here plus my dogs running in the yard, I could not leave it where it was for fear that it would get hurt. I checked this morning and the babies are doing fine. Also there were two babies in the nest when I put the other one back. So I am not sure what happened to the fourth one.

But now my son is asking if we can go to the pet store to buy a baby moffingbird... his pronunciation, he's three.

Also interesting to note is that if a baby bird falls out of a tree, the best thing is to leave it alone because many bird parents will continue to take care of their babies even if they happen to leave the nest a bit too soon.
One more tidbit I learned, most birds don't have a very good sense of smell, so if a bird is touched (like the little one I put back) the parents will not reject it.
