GTP's. I have read a couple pages of info about them and they seem fairly easy to take care of. I know I have to mist them down twice a day, keep the temperature at 85 degrees, humidity 70-80%. I just really want some back up on this info, and some more info on cage size, feeding, handling, (I know they have sensitive bones so I have to be careful not to pull them off the branch, let them come to me) etc... I know they have HUGE teeth, and are aggressive when they are babies. Any info?

Pretty much any Tree Snake is going to be on the aggressive side...They are more a Display snake and do not liked to be handled...

I keep mine in Vision cages...The size depends on the snake...

They're setup so I don't have to take the snake out to clean the floor...I do take them out once a month or so to clean the entire cage and furniture thoroughly though.

I don´t think they´re "fairy easy" to keep, although far from a nightmare.

Just a few tips on the info you posted and your queries:

Humidity/misting: I don´t mist twice a day, only once. It would depend on your set-up. The idea is to have a (close to)100% humidity for about 3 hours and then let it dry out slowly during the day down to around 65-70%. The scope is to recreate the daily rain of the tropical forest they inhabitate. It´s best to mist in the early afternoon.
If you have a baby, you may keep a constant humidity (damp papel towel as substract) of around 80%.
Sometimes they like to drink the water of their coils, so it´s good to mist them directly.

Temp.: Have an horizontal gradient from 88F to 80F. For babies, you may keep a constant temp of around 85-86F

If you acquire a baby under 1 year of age, avoid handling. They´re extremely sensitive and you may hurt them permanently (kink) or even kill them.

Finally, as regards the temperament:

They are calm during the day, but very alert (agressive) once the night falls.
Usually, the Sorong-type and Aru-type GTP´s are calmer, being the Biak-type more nervous and agressive.

I keep my hatchling in a shoebox...



The breeder said it should be able to live in there for up to a year considering it has a normal growth rate, then I will be moving it in to a medium sized cage, then an adult cage after that.

You don't have to mist twice a day, or every day for that matter... it will really depend on your cage and how well it holds humidity. With my hatchling I just keep the paper towel damp. It dries out after about 2 days and I dampen it again. I also keep a bowl of water available at all times.

The most important thing about purchasing a chondro is to buy one from someone who knows what they are doing. It is a good idea to find a breeder who has produced the animals that they have offered for sale. The hatchlings should be offered unsexed and feeding with no problems whatsoever. Most often they will be eating f/t pinky mice.

The breeder should also be able to provide photos of both the sire and dam of the hatchlings available, and may possibly have even more lineage info.
