Exclamation BP not been fed in 6 months!!!

Hellow everyone, i been away from this forum for a long time now. The reason why i have returned is because i have a problem. I jsut rescued a ball python froma friend who got locked up and his bp was left behind with no one to take care of it. It had been in a cold cage with no water and has not been fed in the past 6 months. What do i do? It does not want to eat!!! I placed it in a new cage with the appropriate tempatures and humidity and water. It seems to be drinking a lot of water, but what should i do about getting it to eat? I dont want it to die!

    Please help me!

The fact it isn't dead after 6months of no water is the miracle here. Give it time. Keep fresh water (even a good bath would help - to rehydrate it). Snakes can go a long time with out food.

I would recommend you take him to the vet to see what hidden issues going without water and living in a cold cage has caused. Once you correct all the issues the snake should settle in and start eating.

Its currently wrapped around the water bowl just drinking water, its been at it for the past 15 minutes. Will to much water hurt it? Considering it had nothing for a while...

Poor guy. No advice, but lots of sympathy for the snake. Good luck with him...

6 months isn't nothing for a snake to go without eating, but from water...yikes. After you have met all his other husbandry needs, try a gerbil. It worked for an import I got(and still have) 15 years ago. She wouldn't eat anything else I gave her. Good luck and it's nice you stepped up to take care of it.

Give it some time in its new proper environment! It will eat for sure.

No, I highly doubt she'll drink too much water- shes probably just trying to re-hydrate herself. I feel bad for it- but shes lucky you got her!!

Re: BP not been fed in 6 months!!!

Not sure if you are saying the snake was abondoned without water as well for 6 months?

What were the circumstances? Was the snake in an empty apartment, was it being cared by people - just not being fed?

I cannot imagine that it would be alive if it went 6 months without water to be honest. Six months without food... sucks, but it can bounce back from that. Chances are if the husbandry was off that much, it would not have eaten regardless.

But six months without heat... you need to get that snake to a vet for a check up. Not maybe... but definitely.
