    Question Mite question

    Hi,

Unfortunately my BP got mites but it has been treated and all looks well.
My question is how long should I wait to return some decoration back into his cage?
He was treated for the mites 22 days ago. He is still on paper towels and only his hides and water dish are in his cage at the moment.

I presume the mites came from an organic tree decoration ordered online so I got rid of it just to make sure. I'll be putting some new plastic only decor from now on.

    Thanks in advance.

Mites can come from a variety of places, some can be harmless wood mites and others are actually snake mites. They can come in cage decor, bedding, etc. Which mite product did you use?

If you used a product called Prevent A Mite (PAM) I wouln't worry about them coming back. You can spray everything in your enclosure (except the water source and the animal itself) with PAM, just follow the directions on the can exactly. So you dont have to get rid of any cage /tank decor unless you want too.

AND to actually answer your question, i think it depends on the product you used. some "mite-be-gone" products dont work as well as others, or at all. If there haven't been any more mites i say its okay to put his enclosure back to the way it was. you can always re-treat his enclosure once you set it up and then put him back in.

    Re: Mite question

I used the method told to me by the guy I bought the snake from, he's also a breeder and uses this method himself.

I used a 3 to 10 ratio Nix/water solution (15 minutes with it on in a dry tub then a 15 minute water soak) on the snake and Vapona on the enclosure for 5 days.

I was checking to see if I didn't see any more mites after 20 odd days if they we're really gone.
I'm a bit sad seeing my snake in a enclosure that looks like a mental hospital, hehe

I looked for PAM but didn't find any here in Canada. :\

I think its safe for him to go back to having his normal enclosure.

I would recommend getting a can of PAM. its like..16.00 USD, but its well worth it and one can lasts a LONG time especially for keepers with a few snakes or less.

    Re: Mite question

The life cycle of a mite is 30 days. With that said, I would give 60 days (enough time for any unhatched eggs to hatch and mites to get to adulthood) and if no mites are present, I would say that you are mite free.

    Re: Mite question

What I did with Furio's cage decorations (All wood) was put them in the oven at like 200 degrees checking them about every 15 minutes for 2 hours. Haven't seen a mite since and it gave my apartment a nice camping smell

    Re: Mite question

I had a mite problem when I first got my BP, I used the stuff that Mike at NERD suggested called Black Knight 2 it worked great! it's been 2 months now and not a single one of the buggers has shown up again. I also put the wood that I had in her cage into the oven at 200 degrees F for about an hour.
