My experience as a new BP owner

Just thought I'd give you guys an update... I went to pick up my lil 1 month old baby yesteraday at around six oclock, of course everything was ready beforehand... He spent half a day exploring, didn't even hide once, all he did was move around "smelling" everything and being curious... just when I started worrying, thinking that there was something wrong with him, he found out that those two weird looking green things were hides... he's been hiding ever since... night dropped about an hour ago and he's out again, now he's lying on top of his hide, the temps are fine, so I don't think they are bothering him. Humidity's too high though, but that's just my country, not much I can do about it anyway (I believe).

Thanks for reading!! I'm so anxious, I feel like a first time mom... I guess I am LOL anything he does, I go like "But is this normal????" thank you for the support, reading your posts on the forum really calms me down, I'm not going through this phase alone!!

Sounds normal to me! They're nocturnal so they're more active at night anyways. Until he's settled in and feeling comfortable and safe in his new surroundings, he'll probably be kind of restless.

Thank you for your answer! Yes, I know he's doing alright, I worry too much... I saw him this morning before leaving for work and he was hiding, so I guess things are settling down and he feels comfortable.

I would let the wee fellow settle in its new surroundings although I love your obvious enthusiasm just remember its better to leave alone for a week or so you dont want to be getting it out to handle every 10 mins lol

Better to get off to a good start and letting him settle and feel more confident with his surroundings before too much interaction.

Glad your enjoying it though you wont go wrong if you get stuck asking in here for any advice.

I know exactly how you feel....bringing home that first snake is SUCH a TRIP!

I didnt sleep hardly any the first night I brought mine home. I keep the tank in my bedroom so I would constantly roll over to see if he or she ( not really sure not been sexed lol ) was out or not. I kept reading on the site how addictive herping can be but I told myself I will just get a snake and be done. I now have a ball python, leopard gecko, and fire-bellied toads. My bedroom looks like the reptile section of a zoo. The problem is that I really didnt have the money to buy them but hey thats what college financial aid is for anyway!!! Who needs books? It is only college and my future I dont need to study I have a snake lol. Actually they are college related because I am studying to be a high school biology teacher and plan on keeping these species in my future classroom for students to observe the different behaviors and interact with them.

Just a word of caution about keeping your guys in a high school classroom...for me, it was a constant headache.

I walked in one day to find a kid I didn't know at all trying to open one of the enclosures...

I had to deal with constant tap, tap, tap...why won't they come out? Tap, tap, tap. Very stressful for BP's.

Hard to monitor temp and humidity. My building is dry as the Sahara when the heat's on.

Then some kids want you to call 911 and get them a WAH-mbulance because they are traumatized by in-class feedings.

Some little creeps will throw crap in the enclosures....

My custodians were scared to clean my classroom (snake phobias) so my room looked like a dump because they would only empty the trash and run a push broom through.

Then wait till you get a reputation as the guy who takes in animals, and people start wanting to unload every turtle, baby chick, kitten found on school grounds, lizard, unwanted goldfish, bad dog, broke-wing sparrow.....

LOL!! Yes, I was a bit like that the first night too... and the next day... and the next day even my visits started doing the same thing, I was having kunch with my boyfriend's family and I got up to check on my little guy and my mother-in-law went like "He's hiding, just checked". It was so funny!
