Thayer's/Variable Kingsnake
Hi,
I went to a local pet shop to browse for a new snake, I saw they had a 'Thayer's Kingsnake' (I'm pretty sure that's what it was called, I remember t-h-y-e in the name ). I never heard of this type before and I wondered if anyone had one or knew something about them?
I only found 1 or 2 care sheets online.
I searched Google and none of the pictures really looked like the snake I saw, the one I saw was really nice looking. It was gray with red bands that didn't go all the way around. Almost looked like a gray banded king snake but different.
I'm thinking maybe it wasn't a 'Thayer Kingsnake'. Is there another kingsnake with a similar name perhaps?
Thanks in advance.
Yves

Thanks!
Hmm, the 'Durango Mountain Kingsnake' looks more like the one I saw. I only say that cause of it's banding was way bigger then those Thayer pics.
I was hoping their were going to be more info on this snake. I don't want to get a snake with not a lot of info.

Hmmmm, why would a snake with multiple patterns be called variable?
Thayeri can look like blairs or pyros or greeri or even mexicana.
There is also a LOT of interbreeding between these species in captive collections. If you are looking for a purebred snake, find a reputable breeder.
Go to fauna and do an inquiry for thayeri breeders, someone will point you in the right direction.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

Re: Thayer's/Variable Kingsnake
here's an old thread that shows some of the differences in the variable kingsnakes that I own.

This was one of the few caresheets I found on them

I know that Bob Applegate breeds them, but I don't know if he has any this year.

I also picked one of my thayeri's from Vivid Reptiles.

Re: Thayer's/Variable Kingsnake
Great thanks!
The one I saw was very similar to this one but a nice gray instead of orange.
