There are snap on locks you should be able to buy at a reptile store and there aren't that expensive.

Re: I miss my kingsnake:(
They sell a type of top that should help with escapee snakes.

It has velcro that goes around the tank, and the screen velcros to the side of the tank.
ALso you can try this Zilla makes a locking/sliding screen top which could also help.

Or, with a regular tank, you can go get some plexiglass, a hinge and some latches from an acrylic store and make a solid top for it. As long as you remember to do the latches, there is NO way a snake can get out.
I've converted most all my tanks to using solid tops and have not had any problems since then.

I know for a fact that the zilla sliding tops are not as great as they could be. We had them on the tanks at a privately owned pet store I used to work at and the lid never shut snugly. We only kept BPs in them, but colubrids coulda been out in a heartbeat. Just be wary of that. The plexiglass + hinges idea is just brilliant. I might have to log that away for later use.

I have a 20gallon Long for my Kingsnake. He's never once escaped it. The back plastic clamps fit snugly into place and i rigged a twist-tie to go through the front hole where you would idealy put a lock on the lid.
No way he's getting out, ever, unless he somehow develops super-snake powers and tears through the mesh.

Re: I miss my kingsnake:(
When my corn was a baby, I had him in a 10L tank that just had a sliding screen lid. I *knew* he was little enough to squeeze out between the lid and top, I affixed my own sticky backed velcro to the front inside lip of the lid and the tank. When that sucker was closed, there was NO gap at all and no way possible a snake could push against the Velcro strength to get it open.
Jenson is now in a 20L Zilla viv like pictured below and I have no problem with that lid always fitting snuggly - but then my corn is nearly as big around as a hotdog now, so not possible for him to get out of it, hehe. =)
