I personally don't really care which gender I'm addressed as. If it's important, than it's easy to make it apparent in the sig, in the signing of the name, or even as the screenname.
I just don't see the big deal in knowing which is which on the site.

Not everyone has a sig with thier names and some user names are not easy to figure out .

I think it's a great idea provided it's only optional for a member to display gender.
