    Cage size for BCI

So, looking down the road, I'll need larger cages for my female Bci Columbian red-tails. Note I said they are both female!! They will not be bred and will be pets.
So, how long does the cage need to be? I like cages that give the room they need to stretch out and be a snake. Vin's book recommends 6 feet for females. I know a lot of people say 4 feet, but I don't know what that answer is predicated on. For me, space is not an issue and either is the little bit extra in money I'll spend by getting a 6 instead of a 4 footer. The additional dimensions will be 2x2.
I was looking at the T20's from AP with the glass sliding doors.....
    Thanks everyone!!

If you want to give them the space, I would go for a 6 foot cage. Generally, females grow to around 6-8 feet, so a 6 foot cage will give them plenty of stretching room.

I have been thinking about the same thing. My thinking is, I want room not only for the snake but also me when reaching in and changing water bowls, bedding etc... with out disturbing the snake when in shed, after feeding. I notice when after feeding he is very on guard

Do you have a link for the enclosure you are interested in? It would be nice if we had a link to all the enclosures available to choose from. I have seen several I like but have not found the perfect one yet. Mine will do for the first year or two but as you, want to put him in his final home in the next year or so. Money no object.

Vision has a great cage for Boas..Model# 432

The 3 feet of Depth gives them a lot of room...I keep adult male Retics and Cuban Boas in them.

Stack of 3 on the far end.

    Re: Cage size for BCI

I was looking at these: http://www.animalplastics.com. I am interested in the T20's with the sliding glass doors since I am afraid the plexi might flex enough to pop out of the track given the strength of the push of an adult boa. I have heard pro's and con's of the Vision's and the Boaphile's, but have only heard good things about the AP cages.

I'll give them a call this week and hear what they have to say and see what shipping might cost me. Good to know that I'm not being slammed for wanting the girls to have roomy digs!! Thanks gang!!

I keep all my female 6-7 feet in 4 foot freedom breeders or boaphile cages. They work fine for me. They have plenty of space. Anything over 8 foot needs a 6 foot cage.

I can take a picture if you would like.

    Re: Cage size for BCI

The only thing I don't like about APs is the sliding doors. With Boaphiles, or any other version (that's all up to you), the whole front drops down and that is much easier to take a full size girl out than only using half the cage...her tail will hook around it and make it a project....guaranteed. lol. If you want to go with a 6 foot cage, that is most likely better if space is not an issue and neither is funds, then make sure you use a 1.5-2 foot tall one instead of a 1ft tall one. It looks better and makes it more "eye appealing".

If you like the T20s from AP, I'm going to recommend the swinging doors. This may just be preference, but I'm not a fan of the sliding doors at all. If you use aspen, it will get all crammed into the grooves and so on. They aren't my favorite design at all. They are a pain. lol.

As for visions, the thing you may want to consider is the option for lighting...if you are going to use this new cage for a display...this will be a nice feature.

    Hope this helps.
