You guys are getting me hooked!
I've been looking through this section of the forum for a few weeks now and I'm telling you, I'm getting hooked on boas. They are just so beautiful and from what I've heard they are great to have. So I've been tossing around the idea of possibly getting one. This week I will have a 20L tank available since I'll be moving my Pinstripe and Spider ball pythons into a rack. I am going to a show on the 30th (hopefully) and I was wondering how fast a baby red-tail boa would outgrow a 20L on a normal feeding schedule? (I was told if you feed a boa a little less than normal they don't grow as fast but I refuse to do that)
If I don't get one on the 30th of this month, then definatly by May so I need to start getting my information together and seriously start looking at what I'm really looking for. I have no clue about morphs so maybe some of you could clue me in on some of the kinds of morphs out there. I will be getting a male as boys don't get as big as the girls.

Re: You guys are getting me hooked!
Like I said to Jack, they'll slither right into your heart!
We kept our Suri boa in a 20L for 2 years? Yah...2 years, from when she was just a pipsqueak until we moved her into a 4' x 2' x 2' display cage she is still in now (she's much, MUCH bigger now than in this picture).
0.1 ball python (Cleo), 0.1 surinam bcc (Carmen)
1.0 sunglow motley corn (Jenson), 1.0 albino burmese (Lourdes)
1.0 cat (Nicky), some mooses and ratters, 1.0 hubby (Rick)

Re: You guys are getting me hooked!
So what is the biggest cage I should expect to be buying to house a full grown male RTB? I'm making sure I'll have the space.
And also, what are some of the different kinds of RTB. I keep seeing things like BCI, Suri, Columbian, ect. Someone care to explain what each of these are and others if I missed any, and add photos or links to photos so I can get a visual of these?

I love Pastels, but they aren't a "true" morph. Salmons are getting popular and you can find them at shows, they are a co-dom morph. Kahl Albinos aren't too bad priced either, recessive. I guess it's all on what you wanna spend and what you like the most. I have yearlings that are in a 2' by 1' enclosure and they are fine, but I also don't use a lot of "decorations", just water bowls. I'd like to think a 20L will be fine for at least a year and probably longer. My largest male is only, maybe, 4.5 feet long and only eating a medium rat every other week or so. I guess the first choice you need to make is if you want a BCI or BCC or BCO (or etc etc) and then choose what type from there. Bci's have Hog, Colombian, Nic, Centrals and a few others in that group. Bcc's have Surinames, Guyana's, Peruvians, Brazilians, etc etc. Bco's are Argentines. I'd start there and then get more specific as you go. Colombians have the most morphs. Then Centrals and Nics.
Good luck!

A male boa will need at least a 3x2x1 enclosure when he's full size.

Ok, then I will probably go with a columbian. I used to have a baby columbian when I was young but we had to move and find her a new home.

Re: You guys are getting me hooked!
I almost brought one home on Tuesday but the fiance said we had to wait until we were both comfortable about the idea of bringing home a boa. Since bps only get but so big, we are both comfortable bringing home ball pythons and corn snakes, but since boas get much larger, it will take a little more time before my fiance is ready for a boa. So we are thinking sometime in May and if my fiance isn't comfortable by then, then maybe in the summer. I won't rush my fiance into anything so I will wait patiently for my boa.
