Furio's First Vet Visit...
Furio just went to his first vet visit. He was probed (I was right, he's a boy!) he's also on shots for the mites once a week for the next 3 weeks, vet said he's in excellent health!

I would use "provent a mite" instead much safer , less toxic and is not offensive for the snake. I had 100% success ratio with PaM. As far as I know with the shots there is no guarantee the mites won't come back after you stop the shots but hey I am not a vet .

Re: Furio's First Vet Visit...
Provent A Mite doesn't kill mites that are on the snake though. The shots by my understanding suffocate any mites that are left on him.

Re: Furio's First Vet Visit...
Thanks, appreciate it!
If it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't have known what to do starting up and I'm not new to snakes at all but pretty new to ball python's... Step 2 : Get Furio a girlfriend to breed to in a few years

Re: Furio's First Vet Visit...
What your vet gave your snake was just ivermectin. If the dosage isn't correct, it can cause some problems, such as neurologic disorders. The Provent-A-Mite works just fine. The mites have to get off of the snake to lay eggs, and when they do, they die.
PAM the cage, even Reptile Relief the snake if you must also, then be done with it.
Those shots HURT, ivermectin is THICK almost like penicillin, and it has to go through the snake's entire system to kill the mites. The mites have to BITE the snake and get ivermectin IN their bodies before they will die. Also, reactions to ivermectin aren't all that rare either, and mites these days are getting more and more resistant to different treatments.

Re: Furio's First Vet Visit...
His dosage is 1/100th of a CC diluted down due to the fact that he's only 63grams right now. The shots only have to be done for a 3 week period and he didn't even notice today when he got his first one.

Re: Furio's First Vet Visit...
So you want to wait for the mites to have to bite your snake, possibly transferring diseases or other parasites, before they die? I know I, as well as my vet, would prefer to do the easiest thing possible(IE Provent-A-Mite) before bringing out the big guns(IE painful injections) when it came to solving a simple problem like parasites.

Re: Furio's First Vet Visit...
Well I sprayed PAM 2 weeks ago and saw more so I've sprayed PaM AGAIN and it seems like a double preventative measure so he stays healthy this time. The vet said it's a good way to go and painless and I believe it because being a diabetic, the needles are about the same size as mine and snakes have tougher skin than we do. So when it's done right I doubt any negative effects. Sorry but I think my vet (very reputable) was right, PaM and the injections together is a good way to go. Not to mention he does it with his and breeds and puts out some excellent normals. I don't doubt your opinion... just trying what I was referred too.
